Absolutely agree. My point is, to those who just think they can call 911, the cops can't always be there, and they're darn sure unlikely to be penalized for it. Sometimes you need to be able to handle things until official help arrives.

I will say, however, that "man with a gun" calls were always handled quite promptly when I worked at (not FOR) a police station.

El Paso, Tx. Just north of Juarez, Mexico which I believe is now the murder capitol of the world. The information that I quoted in that statistic, is one of the night commanders of the city, who has been with EPPD for over 20 years. My comments have been mistaken, I believe. I never said that you should point a gun at a person to "scare them off". As Tiger also pointed out, you should anticipate the most out of the situation, I.E., having to use the weapon to kill the other person. Knowing those same facts as a police officer would probably be a good idea, I.E., because you have the ability to use deadly force, doesn't mean you can use it to scare people, as a matter of fact, this would probably get you into trouble because of matters of force continuum, and it very well could have get you injured. I have a good friend with NMSP, who has been on the force for 16 years, working in both rural and metro areas in NM, who has been on SRT for 9 years, and who has NEVER unholstered his firearm (outside of SRT responses where they aren't using holsters anyway), who says that if you really need to pull your weapon on someone, you probably haven't done a good job using the best tool you'll ever had -- your brain.

Everybody gets all rambo on this forum, how many of you are actually cops, or how many of you just watch the TV show?

Keason -- not calling everybody idiots, lol.... kick back! I also think you made the best decision, especially in the face of an immediately presenting situation...

Tiger -- I also agree with you -- as a cop, your training behooves you to always anticipate the worst of any situation. If you walk around daily thinking that Chris Crackhead is going to be your friend, you're probably too naive to be in that line of work. Understanding that point makes me understand your argument.

Not sure exactly what model AR you have, but there are a lot of guys overseas using them for very similar type situations. Just takes a little practice to get comfortable with it.

I know, I was just giving you a hard time :D

I have to disagree with this statement. I just read an article and talked with my buddy in Afghan and many soldiers are picking up folding stock AK's for CQB stuff and will switch to the AR (M4) for anything out from 200+ meters.

maneuvering an assault rifle around in a house is not easy with little to no training. I know the first thing I would go for would be my 1911, slower moving projectile that won't go zipping around if I miss the bad guy but will still stop them in their tracks. Same thing for a shotgun, big and bulky if you don't have the training stick with a hand gun. They are easier to use (IMHO) and faster to reload if the shit really hits the fan.

Keason1*, you did good bro protect that family at all costs and kept a level head :) +1 for you sir.

    Glad everything worked out.

A few years ago we had a meth-head do the same to our door and even with my Pits barking like crazy, it didn't seem to stop him from trying to get in.
I re-racked my pistol on my side of the door and he took off running. He apparently ran across the street to my neighbors house and ran right through their door! Luckily my neighbor is a retired Marine and wrestled the guy out of his house even though my neighbor is very old.
    The perp was subsequently arrested.

I got a red male Dobbie that is 116 pounds, I would have called 911 if the dog did not scare him off 1st & be ready. Glade to hear that you all are ok....The worst thing that has happened to us is at 3am he went crazy barking & he jumped down the steps because some thing or some one was in his back yard by the time I ran down the steps it was gone. But I let him out so he could go check, Yes I had my Sig 229 40 calb with me...

The things required to pull bitches

Well it really depends on the situation. There was an incident down my street where someone got shot, There was a fight, one guy said he was going to come back and finish it. well he came back with a 12 guage and shot the Dad of the house on his yard, The dad had a gun on him pulled it out to shot but it didn't fire. The police said he had all rights to shoot the guy with the 12 guage, because 30+ people heard that threat.

Its very complicated here. I talked with an officer lately, the Officer says that "a reasonable person in the same position as you would have to agree that the the person you shot was about to take someone's life, or that someone's life or well being is in danger and that the force you used was justifiable and there was no other options."

Found this, for all you fellow Californians, Scroll Almost all the way down where it says Justifiable Possession of a Firearm by Certain Prohibited Classes. or hit ctrl+f and type that in the search box and it will take you there.

You need to be careful about the bold part, it actually a legal term. Basically a "reasonable person" is defined by a jury of your peers. Not always are they what you may consider reasonable. While I think the person who was shot by the guy with the 12gage would have been justified in protecting himself, that is not to say it would have been reasonable. Juries may get sucked into the "well why didn't he do XXXX" game by a good lawyer on the prosecution. For instance, instead of staying out in his front yard why didn't he go into the house and call the police and stay inside? Just remember that you are not a reasonable person in the eyes of the law.

    http://74.125.155.132/scholar?q=cac...ce+firearm+force+statistics&hl=en&as_sdt=2000

A quick little article that I found on Google Scholar about the use of force by police. It is a study performed in Dade County, (hopefully metro enough). Table 4-1 has some of the stats I'm talking about. Out of those 7 thousand some arrests, less than 250 firearms were displayed, and only 18 of those incidents firearms were actually used.

I realize this data is a bit dated, however I haven't been able to find any more recent studies. This is a 0.1% incidence rate per arrest, hence my comments. Projecting this data into a time like today would definitely see an increase in those numbers, (all of them, total arrests, firearm presentation, and firearm useage), however I honestly think the percentage increase would be negligible.

should have at least fired a warning shot :) j/k Glad you & your family was okay. We had over $3000 in yard equipment stolen from a detached workshop at our previous house overnight. It's pretty scary to have a break in & theft in a workshop close to your home, I can't imagine actually having someone get into a home. We live in the middle of no where, but we still keep the doors locked at all times.
