At your court appearance, talk to the judge and explain that you were being cautious. The court probably does not even know that you were on a bicycle, they are probably thinking you ran a stop sign in a vehicle. Even though Cali's economy is in a bind, the judge should use reason and at the least reduce your fine. If the judge does not, reduce it, then you can ask for a reset, and fight it. Typically if the cop does not show to the court appearances, then it should get dismissed. But it sounds like that may be more of a problem then you are willing to deal with for now.

The bottom line is that ya- its the law and technically I broke it, thus I can't technically complain.I remember reading in the CA driver's handbook that bikes were to obey the same traffic laws as cars. So I even knew I was breaking the law, thus I suppose it was my ignorance that got me into trouble because I incorrectly assumed that cops wouldn't care about bicycles. I have no problem with the law. The cop was just doing his job.

My only issue is the amount, which to me seems exorbitant. Again- there's not much I can do about it.

Correct. The money part isn't the problem. Time is money and spending all that time in court and so on is more of an issue than the fine. I just also found out that if I pay the fee, I don't have to go to court. Thus I'll just pay the fee and say the hell with it and chalk it up to experience.

True - but the punishment should fit the crime....seems excessive. Once again...I believe that fine is geared towards a vehicle running a red light, which could cause major damage, injury or fatality.

thats retarded....Here in the SFV, I see people biking, skateboarding, walking & running across the main streets ALL THE TIME. It may be illegal, and i could MAYBE understand getting a ticket if you ride through a busy intersection during rush hour and cause traffic problems - but thru a quiet neighborhood? I think that dude gave you a ticket cause he started his day with blue balls.

my ticket for riding on a stand up scooter on the sidewalk was only $110. you should go to court and fight it, maybe the cop wont show up.

In my my state, if you go to court to fight a ticket and the cop who wrote you the ticket doesn't show up for court.....you win your case and walk out of there paying nothing.

I'd be pissed, too. I understand why bikes have to obey the same laws as cars, but it really only matters when there are cars around. (We can't have bikers running out in front of cars and getting people killed.) If there aren't cars, then there's zero harm in running a stop sign on your bike.

I'd be pissed at the cop for being an asshat. That was a money grab. No other way to look at it.

Being cited for running a stop sign on your bicycle, while in a low traffic residential area seems a little excessive to say the lease. If I remember correctly, the law does not differentiate between a bicycle and an auto vehicle either. In this case that would be one of the worst moving violations you could receive and not particulary good for insurance rates either.

On another note, I have about run over, or had bicyclist run into me on numerous occasions because they have ran stop signs or red lights. Every time I ask my self why the police are not out writing tickets to these inconsiderate ass holes.

It sounds to me like the officer who wrote you the ticket needs to use some better judgment.

Call them, or they will usually issue a bench warrant. Then you will have the pleasure of paying all sorts of court fees.

Years ago when I lived in an apartment complex a boy from a adjoining lot rode his bicycle into the door of my car when I was driving to my apartment. He was unhurt and it was totally his fault. His parents refused to pay for the damage to my car which was about $400 to fix. I sued his parents in court and lost. The judge said since he did not do it out of a act of vandalism that the boy or his parents wern't responsible. What a crock of shit and my insurance wouldn't cover it either.
