Course if the engine’s hot/warm, am I correct in thinking I shouldn’t start it without the belt?

Course I had to take off the ps belt 1st, so I “spun” the fan. It turns, however there’s no after spin. In other words, I thought when I’ve spun it before, once I let go, it went another blade or two.

Ok. So chock that last fan comment up to :facepalm:because now that I have the alt belt off, it is spinning very freely, my guess is too freely. I’m going to guess at a good 16 rotations, no resistance, then rocks back & forth a few times.

& I can see a slight rocking in the balancer - I did some hand sanding at one point, so pay more attention to the belt guides….
    https://youtube.com/shorts/P3Iwz-rVlRw?feature=share

& the alt belt is getting thrown off because of this.
    https://youtube.com/shorts/RzFcGs6k0x8?feature=share

Definitely should have used my phone to start with. The sound is better….

The whine when revved did stop with the ps belt off, so not sure what that’s about.

I’d say no. That seems solid. I’d say something with the fan/balancer. I don’t think the fan is supposed to spin that freely. I read on here somewhere that there should be some resistance as well. & I’m guessing there shouldn’t be any wobbling at all at the balancer (am I using the part name correctly? Is it that whole piece where the belts ride?).

However, I was hoping you or someone would tell me….

so you think the noise is coming from the pulley that the fan is bolted to?...the water pump

Maybe? Now I’m wondering about whether the thing I read about the fan was with the belts on or off

So I put the ps belt back on. No alt belt. I guess if I still hear the noise, that would mean it’s something to do with the fan/pump/pulley.
What stabilizes the pulley? Isn’t there a rubber ring somewhere in there? & I imagine a bearing? I do hear a metallic clinking noise.

Ok. Guess I’ll start the truck. Nervous doing this without the alt belt. Guess I just have a few minutes….

Finally got this uploaded. Apparently you have to give the app access to everything, first born, what you had for breakfast, etc….

    https://youtu.be/Z-dMOQVSZ_M

So I don’t know what to make of this.

I’m going to agree that the alternator is making a weird noise. However, the pulley is on good & tight, so the fact that the belt is moving side to side has to be attributed to the middle pulley?

& I forgot to mention, the engine is very vibey & has been. Lopey….

So I just started it up (still no alt belt) & could hear a noise similar to the alternator one. Armed with stethoscope, it’s seems to be coming from the water pump area, left side.

I had put the stethoscope on the front of the pump area before & couldn’t pick up anything…. Don’t think I checked the side….

Ok, I meant the idler pulley which essentially has a bearing part of it

I'm thinkin' I need to do some research & a little more stethoscoping. The left side of the pump is the oil cooler part, so I should probably take the scope to the oil cooler itself. It's possible the noise was reverberating through the alternator since it's right there. However, still need an explanation for what I see as a wobbly water pump/fan pulley. I looked at a parts diagram & don't see any bearings, although that makes no sense to me....
The alternator belt is indeed showing signs of uneven wear....

Ok. Thank you. My bad. I didn’t look further at that part. I also got a little weirded out because the 1st site I went to for the diagram was Toyota of Smithfield & the site has changed. No more diagrams. I really rely on those. & the site is one of those sort of carbon copy ones, so I can’t help wondering if it’s a Toyota decision. In other words, are others soon to follow….

If you have a wobbly on the pulley (I can’t see that) that goes to the fan bracket it’s probably the bearing that’s bad, Sometimes this bearing locks up and other times it just makes noise that comes and goes.
Rock auto has the complete bracket,
I replace this bracket whenever I do the timing belt

I was going to ask if you saw a wobble. Did you look at the 2nd vid in post# 43? Just curious if you see the alt belt slippage? That pulley is on good & tight, alternator main bolt as well. & that was a new belt.
