There's nothin wrong with renting a truck to do dirty stuff.

I used to say, "yeah I got a truck, I'll take it to the landscape yard and do manly truck stuff." Then I saw a front loader head my direction with a full yard of cobblestone, and he had it raised a good five feet above cab height while starting to dump.

That's when I waved him off and came back with a rented trailer.

But at 3 tons, I'd rent a truck too.

Considering you've only got a 4 cylinder I would highly recommend renting the 5x8 trailer and doing multiple extra trips. Depending on the distance your driving it might be worth renting both a full size pickup and 6x12 trailer from uhaul.

You might be able to rent the single axle dump trailer from Home Depot

In that case I would just rent a uhaul truck and 6x12 trailer, you can do it in one trip. I dont know how much uhaul charges per mile but I doubt it'll be very much. Do get the insurance in case anything happens when loading the gravel

    Edit -
Ohh darn, I forgot they rent those, this is definatly a better idea, rent a Home Depot F250 and dump trailer.

Have the gravel delivered. That becomes 3 tons you don't have to unload, vehicles you don't have to rent. Several trips you don't have to make.

    You're welcome

Dirt, gravel and related products add up much faster than you might think.

As an estimate, gravel around weighs 100 pounds per cubic foot.
If you load a 5x8 trailer 12" deep that is 4000 pounds not including the weight of the trailer.

A 4 cylinder truck rated for 3500 pounds.
