There's a reason they sell receiver hooks for this sort of thing. Doing it like the top picture it is quite possible to bend the pin. When you pull a trailer the pin is under shearing stress vs the bending stress caused by looping the strap through it.

    It's a shoe tree. C'mon! ;)

OP, please be careful. I know you're going big, but my father tried that with a tractor. Which promptly tipped over backwards. The EMT said, Most people don't live through that.
But use caution even in your Taco. ;)

I've done it before. I suggest also that you wet the ground around the stump very good. I mean really soak the ground. That will allow the roots to have more give.

not the size of the stump that matters, but the size of the root system that you can't see that's under the ground. We had a small pine shrubbery that was about 4 foot round and 3 feet tall, with the main trunk about 6 inch diameter. We had a chain around the frame of the good old country squire (1984 woody station wagon V8, counterpart to ford crown vic) and it took us at least an hour to get it pulled out. The roots had grown about 3 feet deep and was about 10 feet in diameter and we pulled all of that dirt up with it. that bush was there for at least 20 years so it had time to establish itself. Took us 2 loads of top soil in the station wagon to fill in the crater it left (forget how many bags it was).

Have never done that again in 30 years. Chop the rest down with an ax and then chop up the roots that connect to it. take the chips and just put it on top of the mound as mulch. We've done that to about 5 trees now, usually with a chain saw. none have grown back. just did that last year after tree guys took a 25 foot tree down in our yard. saved me 200 to do it myself rather than have them grind it down.

Why bother taking a chance on that with a new truck? Go test drive a Tundra and use that to pull it out.

Blow that shit out of the ground!! If you use enough explosives, you'll have a place for a nice water feature and you won't have to take your truck in for repairs.
