Just a friendly reminder here to always be prepared no matter what, I went up in the snow today to do a little shooting, didn't have any recovery gear or even a shovel with me..

I know the limits of my truck pretty well so I wasn't worried, and didn't have any problems, but came upon two separate vehicles that were stuck.

One was an F250 that had high centered his front end in a snow drift, the other was a duramax 2500 that had gotten loose and slid into the ditch. I tried to help the guys in the ford, but without a real strap I wasn't going to get them out, they had a chain, and I gave it a few pulls, but told them I wasn't cool with yarding on a chain and said I'd give them a ride to cell service. The duramax guy had a real strap and I pulled him out without much drama. Anyhow, here are a few pics.
Stay safe and have fun! Any day in the snow is a good day

I've made the mistake of not going prepared before and had to improvise. I try to learn from my mistakes. It does amaze me how many people go out in the woods, especially in snow without proper gear. It can turn into a shit show real quick.

I never leave home without my traction pads, recovery straps, shackle, shovel, axe and air compressor. In the summer I usually have all of my camping gear as well and in the winter I have my emergency pack of a sleeping bag, fire starting supplies, camp stove and food. Just in case...

Had to use some of it today....to free up the forklift at work

An unusually high amount of pinstriping.
Learned the same lesson a few years ago. At the time my tool box was just strapped in, the truck needed to go into the shop, so I pulled the box out. The next day my wife and I went for a drive up on the forest service roads (with out my box). Ran across a guy walking down the road. Found out he had high centered his truck, left his girlfriend in the truck and went to go get help. Unfortunately I didn't have anything to pull him with. Gave him a ride to the local store where he bought a tug-strap, went back to his truck and got him out. Needless to say my box is now always bolted in and I always have at least basic recovery gear.

I just bought some recovery gear just in time for winter. Rebuilding my front bumper and adding in a winch mount.

Haha I got the same response from a friend when I told them I had pulled a truck out of the snow :D

I bought a strap today, and put a few shackles in my truck. I'm gonna buy a second strap soon along with a shovel that will stay in my truck. Just a good idea for the winter

Have the gear and learn some recovery techniques. Being able to recover someone also needs to be done safely.

Absolutely true, I'm no stranger to offroad recoveries, I've been going offroad for years, just mainly with other people as I haven't had my own 4x4 in a few years

I can only claim one recovery this year. Recovery equipment was all new this summer. Learned a bunch from the other guys, in doing it, and the limits of the equipment.

Just hate seeing those videos online with guys tearing things up with a strap, a jerk, and a heavy right foot.

LMTV, that's a hell of a pull for a Tacoma, even with snatch blocks. Good work.

I pulled a dirtbag camper similar to this out several months ago...would have left them but they were blocking the trail. During the recovery their black tank drain was ripped off and they dumped the contents of their tank...nasty :puke:

That would be "People Pulling Out" as opposed to "Pulling People Out".....oh, and that people pulling out thing would really be called, "Parents."

FTFY - was meant as a tongue in cheek reply but the truth is "People Pulling Out" is not all that effective unless you consider....

"Of every 100 women whose partners use withdrawal, 4 will become pregnant each year if they always do it correctly. Of every 100 women whose partners use withdrawal, 27 will become pregnant each year if they don't always do it correctly."

    https://www.plannedparenthood.org/learn/birth-control/withdrawal-pull-out-method

But enough of that.....back to Tacomas!! Happy, and safe, wheeling!!

We were visiting the Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce Canyon National Parks and parts of Southern Utah last spring. We got tired the National Park crowds and had some locals give us directions to a cool hiking trail on some BLM land not far from where we were staying.

On the way back we came upon a couple of cowboys in their F250 and stock trailer loaded with livestock. For what ever reason his truck wouldn't shift into 4X4 and he couldn't get enough traction to pull the trailer up a steep gravel covered hill in 4X2. Spinning tires had gotten him a little sideways and backing down wasn't a option either. They unloaded the horse and mule to reduce weight, my wife rode the mule to the top of the hill and I helped pull both truck and trailer up. That was a lot of weight for my little truck, but once we got moving things went well. It was a lot steeper than the photos make it look.
