In a shocking turn of events, the second fix didn't work. But something else may have

First time I was in for the noise Toyota claimed the rear axles being manufactured incorrectly, this time the rear brake drums. After the rear drum replacement today, the very first time I back up into my driveway the noise happens again.
    :annoyed:

I come home, talk to my friend who has a Tacoma and read this thread, and he mentions @dangeroso post about the heat shield. I say why not crawl under again and look for heat shield out of place and low and behold, the front part of my gas tank heat shield is bent towards the driveshaft. While wheeling it must have bent out of place, but the kicker is the piece wasn't touching anything as it was parked in my driveway. Maybe it could touch in certain circumstances, but the noise happened literally every time I backed up (and only on backup) after a certain point about two months ago.

I'm very much hoping that is the cause and the Toyota "master tech" had serious tunnel vision and didn't even look at the entire underside of the vehicle, but this could have been the issue the whole time. And I could have got free axles and brake drums out of it LOL. I'll have to wait and see when I can test more tomorrow.

Is there rub marks on the driveshaft?

Not a single bit. The shield was close to the rubber boot, not even metal. So weird...

Safe to say that was the problem. I'd love to see the "master tech's" face if someone tells him what it was.

Always check your heat shields kids!

I know this thread is 2.5 years old, but I recently starting having the same noise and have checked my brakes, front and back, carrier bearing etc. Found this thread !

Thank goodness, I found this thread.

I drove through some water, probably 1 foot. Tropical storm Debby laid down her water on us for like three days down here in Florida, and this was my exact problem.

It was so strange because I thought it was my brakes at first, but really strange that the noise would only come in reverse.

Sorry, for whomever had to go through it.

To my fellow taco brothers !
