Purchased to keep vs. Purchased to sell

Discussion in '3rd Gen. Tacomas (2016-2023)' started by Honda2Toyota, Dec 3, 2020.

Did you purchase your truck with the intention of keeping it or selling it down the road?

  1. Driving it until the wheels fall off; this thing ain't going nowhere.

  2. These things hold value so well, I always intended to resell eventually!

    So as the title says....

....who purchased their truck with no intention of reselling? I may be the wierd one, but I've often found myself wondering how may people purchased their trucks without ever having the intention of selling them later on down the road. Obviously resale value impacted my decision initially(always good to know they produce a decent return), but I purchased the truck because it seems to suit my needs perfectly, and does what I need it to, when I need it to, without complaint. As a result, I will likely keep this truck until it falls apart or fails to the degree it HAS to be replaced.

On the other hand; these trucks do so well on the used side, it's foolish not to acknowledge how possible it is to resell these trucks every few years, and lose only a minimal portion of your initial investment.

That being said; who planned initially on keeping the truck for as long as it allows, and who planned to upgrade in a few years time regardless, and why?

You don't buy a Tacoma as an investment vehicle. You buy a Tacoma so it will hopefully last a long time lol.

Logic says you're right! In my case, I purchased it to last as long as possible, but it amazes me how many people I know who only keep a vehicle until the next 'new, shiny thing' comes along. lol

It's not an investment, it's a mental issue. People buy/lease the newest thing because they think it makes them appear better to whatever group they want to belong to and it is the only way they can feel good about themselves.

I intend on keeping my Tacoma for as long as possible. Knowing it has an outstanding resale value is reassuring though.

I buy a new vehicle every couple years. Toyotas are some of my favorite because the resell is great. I can sell a few years after purchase for usually only a few grand less than I bought it for. No other vehicle has consistently been the same. I never plan to keep a vehicle "till the wheels fall off"

To be fair, everyone is motivated by different things. Some people are motivated to get a new truck and keep it until it dies. We are talking about having a goal of getting 250,000 miles or more. Other folks want a new car smell and the latest and greatest Technology so they are on a two to three year cycle. Depends on what motivates you.

As for me, I am on a 5 / 10 year cycle. My truck is weekender vehicle. I use it for projects, road trips, car camping and what I call basic off road adventures (less than 5% of the time). I had a 2005 SR5 which I kept for 15 years. It was an Access Cab so when the family got too big we moved to a TRD OR DC. I won't even think about getting another truck for a minimum of 10 years. Possible 12. So for 10 years I am locked in. After that, probably take it year in and year out.

As for the daily driver, I keep that 5 years without looking. Sometimes I stretch that to 6, but all under warranty.

I don't think about reselling or resale value because I know that is baked in. That's why I bought a Tacoma in the first place -- so I wouldn't have to worry about that.

    :)

Had my 03 Tundra 16 years before my 2018 Taco. Thought Id have the Tundra forever until frame rust compromised it. Traded the 2018 Taco in for 2020 Taco because it had a lot of the issues described here by others. The 2020 is everything I wish the 2018 should have been, as I could have saved a years worth of payments. Absolutely no issues with the 2020, and it is a blast to drive. Hope to keep it as long as I can.

I have had a lifetime of cheap clunkers and wheezers, almost all were vehicles of opportunity that were 1) cheap 2) didn't need too much work to be reliable 3) would serve a purpose. Most of these were purchased for the second hundred thousand miles a few the third, I take care of my machines and all gave good service until they became just too rusty.

I saw 3ed gen and thought it looked cool, I wanted one. It is my metaphorical gold watch for all the work years -- an old mans trophy, something to polish.

It sits in the garage to go out on nice weekend days or summer road trips -- yes, I bought a 4 x 4 to NOT drive in the winter. It is the only vehicle I ever made payments on. My daily is a $1200 van, the Tacoma will be in the garage until I am in the ground.

I tend to keep my vehicles a long time then give them to family members who need a reliable vehicle. So, I usually get my money's worth and then some.

Valid point indeed! I can say I've seen this enough in person to agree with you, unfortunately.

Same! If my hand is ever forced, at least I know I won't completely lose my ass on it.

Respect! I know a few people with this mindset, and you're right imo - I've yet to find another vehicle that does as well on the back-end as Toyota's seem to; it's wild!

We're in the same boat. Until this truck, I had quite a few vehicles, but they all served different purposes and were present at vastly different points in my life; they tended to hang around though. My wife went through quite a few vehicles in the course of a couple years, but that was more due to her not knowing what she truly wanted, than any direct issue with the vehicles themselves. We got her into a 2015 4runner a couple years ago; fortunately she loves it and hasn't looked back yet. As for me, I have no intention of getting rid of this truck; she's about to roll over 100k and is still going strong with little issues to report along the way.

I love buying new rigs but I would love to have no payment either. Keeping it for now, but always tempted to sell due to the high resale value. It makes it harder keeping it lol.

Yeah, this is true(at least to me). Maybe I'm simple, but every time it's come back from service or the body shop after a detailing(or even just wash it myself), I find myself pleased with my purchase a little bit more.

Yeah, had my truck in a friend's body shop recently and at one point I was curious as to what it would take to total it; blew my freakin' mind when they told me the truck is worth only a couple grand UNDER what I paid for it over 4 years ago....WITH almost 100k on the clock. Insane lol

I usually keep my vehicles for about 10 years before I buy another, but I am retiring in 9 years so I plan to keep this truck till the wheels fall of, I don't want any payments when I am retired.

resale def factored into the purchase price but was more if I needed to sell it but had no intention of selling. hard to knock that you can drive a Tacoma for 5 years and rack up 50-60k and turn around and sell it for close to the selling price. A good chunk of 2nd gens for awhile was selling used at almost spot-on new pricing. But never really had the intention of reselling but a factor if you need to.

It's an interesting question, one I've been noodling for some time. I've done all the "major" mods to give my truck a boost without affecting the stock look (wheels, gears, OVT, lighting, largest tires w/o lift, etc). Now I'm at the point where I want to chop fenders, add bumpers, suspension, and all that goes along with it. The main reason I haven't yet is the thought that maybe I'd want to sell it.

But, why the hell would I sell it? I don't think there's a competitor in the market that delivers a comparable product. At least, not for a more competitive price. I think the new tacos are nice, but not nice enough that I'd give up the equity for a new gizmo and shiny paint. I guess I should thank you for starting this thread...I've convinced myself that some chopping over the winter is a necessity. Keepin' it.

yah once you start cutting its all over. I am way past getting top value for a stock truck (fenders, relocation, wiring, engine, etc)
