Guys I’m in a little bit of a pickle. Some honest inputs would really help here.

I inherited some monies from my folks and made a couple bucks from the stock market. I’m not well off but I’m comfortable financially. I’m currently driving a 3rd Gen Tacoma and despite people thinking it’s inferior mechanically. It’s has been good to me. But here is the thing, I always wanted a 4runner. Especially the limited nightshade. I just not feeling the front design of a Pro and I don’t even off-road to use all those extras.

You might ask why not just trade in the Turd Gen and get a 4R. Thing is the Tacoma is far more useful for me currently and I’m planning to keep it until I see holes thru the body.

I want to buy the 2021 or possibly the 2022, whichever the last year model before Toyota fuck it up with the 6th Gen. Buy it cash, take it to some pro shop to have it prepped for long term storage and park it in my garage. Once my Taco bites the dust. I break out the cover and drive the 4runner. I’m talking may be 20 years from now (if I didn’t get hit by a bus or died of cancer by 2040.)

what do you guys say. Stupid? Ingenious? I can’t make my mind up. I do want to wait and see what the next Gen have to offer but I somehow feel the 5th Gen is as good get as it gets (unless the 6th Gen came out kicking asses taking names then I’ll wait another 12 years) I don’t care much for all the fancy shits like the Explorers. I like it old style and simple.

If you park it and wait 20 years and don't drain every single fluid, you'll still have to replace most of it not all of the hoses, etc.

In 20 years there might be a lot of other things you're interested in. In 20 years an immaculate, perfect-condition 5th gen 4Runner still will probably only be worth as much as it was new, at most. In 20 years, you'll still be able to find used 20-year-old 4Runners for sale. They have sure sold enough of them.

That said, if you're 100% can't-be-convinced-otherwse-certain, buy the best 5th gen and don't look back. Not what I would do, but you do you.

You might be waiting for awhile for your Taco to bite the dust. Along the lines of @Roody stated, you'd have to drive it periodically to keep things running. And who knows what the state of the world is in 20 years.... we might have run out of oil by them!! Why not enjoy both at the same time?

that’s interesting. Besides it probably being seriously outdated in 20 years, it may need retrofits. Think of the way they are pushing electrics, self driving or at least computerized safety, plus compatibility with whatever tech they come up with. Parts may also be an issue (who knows).

Thinking financially, you could invest that, maybe in teal estate which will yield enough to replace whatever you 4Runner would cost ..,

these are disposable commodities so they are rarely an investment. If you do have some real cash, buy a rental property somewhere and sit even more comfortable in your later years. Vehicles are like buying shoes, phone, computers, tv.... depreciating commodities always worth much less, always get outdated, and just not an investment. Except some specific classes vehicles.

Your idea is good. This is my personal opinion. Extend your home work about 5th Gen 4Runners to avoid any mistakes, before is not too late. I'm skeptical about all new Toyotas - (cars, SUV, and trucks).

The 4Runner has the 4.0L and 5 speed that the 2nd gens had with a couple of tweaks. Ours hasn't had any issues so far except for one case of bad fuel. Our Tacoma has been pretty much flawless.

I feel the same way about my 2003 1st gen like you do about your 3rd gen. Back in 2012 I purchased my first T4R to make room for our +1 into our family. Why not enjoy both NOW, it's all about enjoying the driving experience in our vehicles. Heck in 20 years you might want a much smoother softer ride. I agree on previous statement on investing the money which you more than likely are already doing. Good Luck on your decision!
