I'm all about having a clean vehicle, and the 01-04s appeal to me and are definitely my focus of most of my searching, but I would love to spend less then 10 grand, and if i can find a clean pre 2001 for 6-8 I would love to jump on it.

its been a while since i was all up to par on the tacomas, so I know the 22re is the bomb proof motor, but every once and a blue moon I tow a 18" center console duck boat, and the 4cyl I feel would struggle with that..?

So thats why I lean towards the 6 cyl, but the 3.0's are junk, so the 3.4's a must, so the 01-04's are a must. grrrrrrrrrrrrr $$$$

Basically I want to have a lowest possible vehicle payment, because having a big payment on top of 80k in college loans is no fun, learning that as we speak (2006 built cummins, 650+HP/1100+tq.

So are the pre 01's even something to consider in my case? And the rust issues?

yes rust is an issue, make sure the truck has been recently inspected.

and I got my truck for 8k with 146k miles so it is possible.

I think the 3.4 was available in Tacomas as old as 96. Spending less than 10k is possible depending on what combo you want (xtra cab, double cab, 4x4, prerunner, TRD, Limited, etc.) Double cabs tend to be more expensive and 4x4 jacks up the price as well. With that said, you can get 4x4 xtracabs in the 10k range no problem. Not sure about pulling an 18" boat with it, but I'm sure others will chime in about that.

Ok, I think you need to do a little more research....

The 95-2000 Tacoma's have the same motor options as the 01-04. There is no 22re or 3.0 V6 in a Tacoma, those motors were in the pre-Tacoma Toyota pickups.

It alwasy astounded me that people will pay double the price for a 01-04 Tacoma with the same miles as one that is a 95-2000. The 01-04's may have a couple new bells and whistles, but they are basically the same damn thing.

Anyway, the 2.7L 4 cylinder that is found in Tacoma's is a great motor, but I'm not sure how it would do towing a boat, you would have to ask some people who own a Tacoma with that engine. The 3.4L V6 in the Tacoma's is a fantastic engine as well with good power, but you will pay more for it.

my apologies on having the years off.

so 1995-2004..make sure it had a rust inspection (does toyota do the frame coating recall thing and guarantee it like they do with the 01-04's?) and the 3.4v6 and ill be good? dont need the quad cab, extra cab will work

The frame guarantee lasts for 15 years after the model year... if you call your local Toyota dealer and give them the VIN# of the truck you are interested in, then they can look in their database and let you know if the frame has been inspected yet for rust at any Toyota dealer in the country.
