I quoted and changed his comment to show that, of the aftermarket manufacturers, Wix is on the top of the list.

Thanks. Having been a Wix fanboy in the past looks like I need to do some research/change my tune...

Wix is owned by MANN+HUMMEL. Who owns Purolator, who makes Bosch & a lot of other 'brands' including Napa. This is a fact. I will not buy ANYTHING from those scumbags ever again. They probably have some girl on her cell phone doing quality control! :annoyed:

    Too few to list.
Just because its made by the same company doesn't mean its the same. Each manufacturer has their own specification. Just like Johnson Controls makes a lot of batteries for different manufacturers and they make cheap ones and good ones per each manufacturer's specs.

Exactly. Hard data is often boring and lacks pictures. The opposite, however, is just a bunch of observations and opinions with pictures to "back it up" with so many holes in the logic that it's little more than a display of one persons curiosity and desire to tear apart an oil filter(or report what their dad/uncle/friend has said for many years). It was meant to be both food for thought and a hope that someone could direct those of us that don't mind reading in the direction of tests that weren't conducted in a driveway with the use of an angle grinder or bandsaw.

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. We'll ship our flagship model out with defects that can be plainly seen before it's even in the box. The generics, shall be scrutinized. If they were so great they would not have been bought out by Germans.
Hudson Valley, I used live in Fishkill.

I'm done with this thread, just wanted you guys to know. Not to start a war of words. I've been working on vehicles since I was 7. I'm 51 now. I've worked on International Harvester Paystar's to Ford Pinto's (even Chevy Vega's). Think what you like, it's a bubble gum world. Adios!

Quote: "Sorry, even an opinionated pro wrench with years of experience is just that...opinionated. I want to see actual hard data, not just "I took it apart, this is what it looks like to me and you're an idiot if you don't see it the same way."

My "opinionated observation" cant ignore the fact that some of the "Boss" filters that are being observed by fellow members are almost totally closed internally. If I was able to get a good photo of the one I have it would have been posted. The fact that the louvered screen is not punched thru enough to flow oil will cause the filter to run in bypass mode. Hard to believe that some cant see it for what it is...piss poor quality control!! Ive used Purolators for years amongst other brands. Never been brand loyal to any. But this is an eye opener. Had I used this filter cant imagine what damage it would have caused.

I dont consider myself an expert mechanic...but with more than 42 years of turning wrenches ive learned a thing or two. In fact I start changing oil on moms cars when I was 14, and have personally owned 30+ cars and have done hundreds of oil changes since. So dont tell me its just an "opinionated observation". End of rant.

There's certainly nothing wrong with forming a strong opinion based on personal experience; we all do it. I obviously got on a soap box; it had more to do with the opinions circulating on ALL available oil filters. I definitely overshot the scope of the thread, as it was focused on Purolator brand. I was more playing devils advocate to the people that want to claim that all but OEM filters are junk. Quality control issues are one thing. A filter design that is poor and leading to significantly reduced engine life is another. The people that buy every filter available and cut it open seem to be the latter. Lastly, I certainly don't devalue another persons experience. It just didn't make good sense to me that every other filter on the market is complete trash. Again, I overshot the scope of the thread and should have probably taken my rant to a thread that was addressing ALL other filters.

    Same as everybody else...
I have always used OEM filters usually bought at Amazon. Maybe I've had bad luck with AM filters but seems like OEM just fits better, whether it's an air, cabin or oil filter. Just my experience as I'm sure lots of folks are happy with AP filters.

Who the hell buys their filters on Amazon??? You go get an oil filter & oil at a local place. Are you actually waiting for Fedx or UPS to deliver. I'm truly DONE with life in general!

When you live 20 minutes from the nearest place to buy an oil filter, Amazon isn't such a bad option. Don't get me wrong, I love to support small business. What I don't love, is when small business carries a crap-brand and is selling it at the same premium price that an even further away small business is selling a premium brand for. Amazon>Walmart. Both are horrible employers. Amazon hasn't yet stopped to the level of
Walmart. I digress. Yes, planning ahead solves all of that. It's just that when you live far from anywhere, a Prime membership saves a person from spending an entire day running here, there, and everywhere on the dedicated "day into town."

Are you guys still getting D1s and D3s at your dealerships? I ask because when I went to get some filters they guy said oh yeah that changed to a G2 for your truck. Sure enough the G2 has 2TR-FE on the box but it isn't pre lubed or sealed. Just curious.

Your points are well taken, at least with me. 45+ years of wrenching on cars/motorcycles have led me to believe that oil is oil and a filter is a filter. I've used all there is to use and have yet to see any difference. I change them when you are supposed to and often times, well in advance of that.

Engine oil/filters - an endless argument.

For all you OEM filter freaks.

Never forget that Toyota doesn't make filters.

Their filter maker at any given moment of purchase is the low bidder. Kind of like O rings for the space shuttle were.

Their filter is someone elses filter painted and logoed differently.

Not saying don't use them. Just saying they aren't magic. There is a reason they are 'cheap', and it's not 'because Amazon'.

Lowest bidder or not they still have to pass quality standards set by Toyota.

Toyota cheapening the standards is what I will be watching for. That'll be up here almost instantly if it happens though.
