Yes, folks. It appears a purple tank top escaped into the wild and cross bred with a boa constrictor. Their only misfit offspring grew up angry and bullied, then committed suicide by wrapping itself around my cv boot and squeezing out evey last bit of grease it could. The other cv boots are very sad. The affected boot, however, is in the ICU with a fighting chance of making it.

I went to change my oil. Everthing was fine. Then I looked over and saw the crime scene. Grease was eveywhere. But after cleaning up the injured victim, I found no holes in the boot. The only holes were in the shirt. The grease must have slowly oozed from the seal as the death grip tightened. I think it came from the outter seal, and i think more than half is gone. We need a transfusion!

Ok. So now comes the questions... What do I do now? It's a 2011 with 88k. The grease that came out was... Greasy, but not bad looking. How can get more grease in, and what kind should I use? I dont really want to pull it off if i don't have to. Be gentle with your response, as this is a time of mourning and deep reflection. Thank you.20190902_091638.jpg 20190902_092121.jpg

Damn.. Any ideas how long its been in there? Id would wonder about abrasion of the boot where the shirt was rubbing, even though it was covered in grease Im sure it still got pretty warm rolling down the road like that

Well if the boot is ok, a regular grease gun with a needle attachment and poke the boot. Works for me, but jeez what bad luck lol.

The ridges on the boot looked a tad worn but in tact. No telling how long it was there. Could have been months! Even though it was wrapped up, it was well lubed so maybe friction wasnt as much of a problem.

Fill your kitchen sink with lukewarm water mixed with plenty of dawn dish soap. Let soak for two hours, rinse with cold water, then refill the kitchen sink and agitate by hand until most of the grease is gone. Spot treat the stubborn stains with a tide stick. That tank top should be wearable in no time.

Yes it will cause a leak. A small leak, but a leak nonetheless. More importantly, it'll also provide a way for dirt to get into the joint and cause premature failure. The least intrusive way I can think of to get grease back in the boot would be to carefully cut off the inner clamp and use the needle attachment on the grease gun to slide under the boot and squirt away. The problem is you don't know how much is missing or how much you're putting in there. You can then use a regular hose clamp to seal it back up. This is of course your best option if the boot is otherwise undamaged. But honestly all that grease on the shirt came from somewhere so I'd look for the smallest tear in the boot or damage to the outer clamp. You may need to replace the boot and can regrease the proper way using proper axle grease.

Def. in for the clean Tank Top photo's.

I think you slide the grease needle between boot and compression clamp, if not able, remove axle side inner (smaller) clamp and grease and replace clamp.
I posted a couple weeks ago about a leaky boot, sans the suicidal Tank Top, but only needed to wipe it off, so far no other grease exuding...

Thank you thank you! Now that is a damned fine write up, sir. I hope not to tear down the whole thing but it may be an excuse to buy me some new tools!

Any thoughts about just getting the grease from toyota? I see part numbers on those grease packets... Will have to make some phone calls.

Not my write up it was done by @turbodb. Maybe he will chime in on the the grease, keep in mind this is for a 1st Gen but the process should be similar.
