How important is this feature to you? Is it’s deal breaker if it doesn’t have a Toyota locker? Would you definitely install an after market locker? Obviously I understand for many people it would depend on how they use their four-wheel-drive. Any of your ideas would be helpful.

Was a deal breaker for me when looking for my truck, but like you said it really depends on how you plan on using your truck. Most people that just need 4wd to commute around town in bad/snowy conditions probably won't ever use one if they had it. Same if you only stick to stick to easy trails, unless you find yourself stuck on something you didn't mean to get stuck on.

I planned on doing trails where a rear locker would come in handy and I would rather not have needed to spend the money to install one aftermarket, so I looked for an e-locker truck.

I know some people prefer the air lockers over the TRD e-locker, but I use mine frequently and I've never had any issues with it.

edit - just realized this was on the 4runner forum...they're definitely harder to find on the 4runners than on the Tacomas. If I was looking for a 4runner I might settle for one without and add one aftermarket since they're not as easy to come by.

Only the ‘09 Trail came with a locker in the 4th gens.

I don't know if the 4Runner uses the same push button locker that came on the 1st and 2nd Gen Tacoma's with the Off Road pkg. But, if they do, and you plan to wheel with anything larger than a stock tire, I would go with an aftermarket locker. The carrier bearings and bearing caps on the trd locker rear ends don't hold up to extra stress like the one piece girdle style bearing cap on the non trd axles. Maybe its just me, but I hated my push button locker in my TRD Taco, blew two sets of gears in it. Never had issues with a non trd axle and detroit locker though. So, if it were me, I'd find a 4Runner that I wanted, color, package, trim, etc...and throw an aftermarket locker in it if you plan to wheel at all.
