I tried it while in motion on the way home. Gave me a pop up saying to hold the button to shut down, no other lights

This is what my vehicle does too when in motion. The OP has said nothing about being in motion, just in Drive. If stationary and in Drive and one pushes the Start/Stop button once the vehicle's engine will turn off.

What I believe the OP is trying to say is that a passenger could reach over and press the button and the vehicle's engine would turn off and worse the steering wheel locks. This was a legal and very real safety problem for irate passengers wishing to take over the control of the vehicle in the past. There must be those who remember this in the news decades ago. Imagine a passenger turning off and removing the keys of an old fashion vehicle and throwing the keys out the window. The steering wheel locks and the occupants are close to being dead depending upon the road conditions.

This was partially addressed by having to rotate the key and push in and rotate the key some more before being able to remove the key from the ignition. I think the FMVSS 114 would have this in the requirements.

If the OP is moving while pressing the Start/Stop button once and the engine stops, then something is definitely wrong with his vehicle and there might be a good chance Toyota would like to see it. In or out of warranty.

I totally understand your concern. To press the button while the truck in park, it should perform start/stop consequently as desired. However, the button shuts the truck down when it’s in motion does sounds alarming, hopefully it’s just the software glitch.

Scrubbed some tires, and knocked a dent out.
Well now I gotta test mine. Turned it off out of park before so I could keep accesorie on, but pretty sure is was in neutral. Also I wasn't moving. I have a feeling if the truck senses you were moving it wouldn't actually turned off.

My dog fell into my shifter on the interstate and knocked it into park! Fortunately I just had to shift back to drive, no harm.

I missed the ambiguity of your op. Were you moving or stationary in D?

The first time I noticed, I was in drive sitting in the parking lot.

That’s normal and I don’t really see the concern. Try it while moving. You should need to hold the button or press it thrice to kill the engine

Your answer sounds correct, that's not how this truck operates
    Thanks.

I have a non- Toyota push to start. If I am stopped in drive and push the start/stop button the engine shuts off no warnings. This has happened to me multiple times because my other car has stop assist where it automatically holds the car, then places it in park when you unbuckle, and sometimes body habits don’t transfer from car to car.

Heck, I had a F-150 with parking that would move the shifting lever and steer for you.

If you put your foot on the brake and press the start/stop button it will turn on or off the engine as if you’re turning the old ignition tumbler.

Do you know what ACCESSORY mode is? That's when electrical system is on, but engine is OFF.
Your Tacoma operates as designed. It turns off the engine when A/t is in Drive, truck is not moving.

The Start/Stop button can accidentally be pressed if one is attempting to switch from 2WD to 4H at speed.

A warning light comes on but the engine does not shutoff.

Like was mentioned, if the engine needs to be stopped in an emergency, do as the manual says.

    Happy Friday! :bananadance: :boink:

It’s not a SW glitch. Read the post.
