Which part? Violently smashing out your tail lights? Or diagnosing a no-start condition?

This would be ridiculous lol. I can confirm for sure that's not the case. Had a coworker call me when I was in my way home from work to tell me a tail light was out. Truck started, drove, accelerated, stopped, all the things just fine

Yup, I had a 2009 Chevy HHR and wanted to get rid of a feature and to remove the module involved splicing through the module to be removed. Was able to accomplish that mod in a different manner.

Attached is the simpleton overview of the CAN Tacoma system:

Seems BSM would have no effect upon the powertrain operation of the vehicle.

Yea in one way it makes their system more finicky since the whole network runs the length of the vehicle but the plus side is it makes it pretty easy to check network integrity since the terminating resistors are on either end of the network.

    Interesting.
I'm sure if I studied the wiring diagrams long enough I could find some plausibilities of something in the rear that could cause a no start but not up to it right now.

Your post #5 I believe is most likely correct in that a fuse blew concerning the stop or brake circuits.

A couple of months ago I hit some deep water on the freeway. Had a dash message “BSM Not Available”. My truck started and ran fine with the error message. I dried all the connections and BSM is working fine now.

Also, I am noticing more 3rd Gens on the road with at least one tail light not working. They probably don’t even know their tail light is not working.

I had a back up light burnt and my truck still started. So no I do not agree with this affecting the starting from a push button. Also I did not realize that my bulb was burnt till people noticed it and told me. It took me about a week to take it in and have it checked. I am not mechanically inclined to do it myself.

I have noticed some 3Gs with tail lights out turn signals seem to work. That's probably why I noticed the tails out 2nd thought it was probably the brake light being out. I thought it was just a bulb it had to be more than a few trucks for me to notice.

It is hard to believe toyota vehicles with burnt out lights. I see a lot on the big 3 manufacturers but Toyota never thought in a 100 years this would happen. I have owned a lot of Toyotas over the years and this is the newest one with back up light burnt twice in a month. Now it is fixed but it is besides the point. Unbelievable must a coincidence or is Toyota joining the rest of the Auto industry with flaws.

I just watched the referenced video yesterday. He specifically mentions the newer generation of tacomas. Since this is the turd gen subforum I think we are safe here. Maybe post this in the 4th gen sub and see what people say.

First off Thanks for the link and the time stamp, wish more people would do that.

Nope, to the “not our generation” concern. Just removed my STOP fuse and the truck will not start. Removal of the STOP relay did not cause a no start condition. So @Dm93 in post #5 was correct.

Only two positives I can see in learning this bit of trivia: is it is another avenue for those wishing to incorporate a kill switch and those of us that like to run into things. I would not have thought of something so simple on the trail. Would have felt sooo… STUPID if it had occurred to me.

Ok, so the originators crushed the tail light enough to pop a fuse.

The one test I didn't do
