Push me towards OME 2" or Icons

Alrighty, ISO some peer pressure to swing me either way.

    2019 DCSB 4x4 stock

I'm eyeballing the OME 2" medium kit and also considering the Icon stage 3 since it comes with UCAs.

I was initially leaning towards the icons, but I haven't read too many positive reviews on them, and read quite a few stories about their shocks rusting.

I know the icons are twice the price and probably not fair to compare, but this is my daily driver and I only play on the weekends (sometimes pretty hard).

I'll be putting 285/70/17 and may even go 285/75/17 and do NOT care how much :sawzall: I have to do to the truck. Waiting for the wheels to come in before I decide on lift.

Money ready to spend. And yes, I've searched endlessly.

    Thanks in advance!

Oh, I should have added, I'm also open to any other lift in the price range.

    Thanks

    I'm here for the memes
King's (front and rear) and Total Chaos UCA is one of the best setups you can get. Wheelers offroad always has the best prices when it comes to these items for sale. I've bought and installed many of these items, I like them way better than my Fox shocks personally.

I have an old man emu lift with dakars.

I think it will suit you well. If you want coilovers, I'm personally going kings when that time comes

I'm looking into the BP51 kit. Looks appealing to me.

If you are gonna spend all that money how would you feel knowing that the BP51 kit will offer no extra travel over the standard OME stuff, or even worse that the front shock/strut is the same length as stock but you sit 2 inches into the already minimal down travel. if you want to spend on a nice lift at least go mid travel with UCA's, pick your coil over, it is all personal preference once you get there. mid travel guys should chime in here to assist you. for the rears the dakars are a good choice, but again don't use the OME shocks, they're short as shit balls. you need to find a shock that is at least 25 inches long for the rear, preferably 26-27. bottom line is when you're wheeling you need wheels on the ground, no or little travel doesn't really keep the wheels down.

Icon are a digressive shock and have a shoddy track record for reliability and customer service.

If you are going to spend $3k on a suspension you might as well get King or ADS

Why not Bilstein 6112/5160s with new UCAs and 3-pack AAL or Dakars?

Correct, I have been seeing a bunch of bad reviews on Icons for various reasons. Plus I hear they rust easily. I am no longer considering them.

I ran Fox stuff on my f150 reg fab short bed 4x4 and was really happy with them for the 50k I had the truck. No rust either! You could go extended travel rears and mid travel front and have a fantastic ride!

I’ve got icons on mine and have been very happy with performance and their customer service. Here’s what I will tell you though, be honest with yourself on how you’ll be using the truck. If you’re going to benefit from performance coilovers like icon/king/fox/ads then buying the OME kit will be a waste of money - because you’ll want to “upgrade” later. Don’t get me wrong - OME is a fantastic kit and is more than most people need anyway - but if that itch to upgrade to king or icon is going to bite you down the road, go ahead and make that big purchase this time - rebuild as needed.

I'm still unclear on this digressive vs. progressive valving... There sure seems to be a lot "internet knowledge" about the differences but the anecdotal reports coming from Fox shock user/owners is they wish they hadn't purchased them for their Tacomas. Every report that I've seen is that they are too stiff and too rough at low speed and on average "joe" off-road trails or washboard roads. This seems totally contrary to what a progressive shock is posta do... Those that bring up the progressive valving claim Fox shocks should be "loose" and "soft" at low speed and over mild obstacles, and they should stiffen up at higher speed, bigger, and deeper impacts.

I don't get it... unless there is more voodoo to this whole shock valving thing than meets the eye...

Just gonna plug Fox again here since I forgot I also ran their shocks on my JK matched with the appropriate RK springs and it drove shockingly nice for what it was.

Appreciate all the feedback. I love these sorts of discussions because it's how we learn - from other's experiences.

I'm just looking for what many others also want: great lift for daily driving but one that will also "hang with the boys" on Saturdays.

OME is perfect then. if you haul anything - don’t let people talk you out of the heavy duty
Dakars either.... I usually have my bed unloaded but when I throw the ATV in the back, it’s nice to know they can carry the weight. They don’t ride too rough, despite their reputation! You can always remove a leaf if needed.

Kings and fox don't stiffen up at higher speeds, they stiffen through the shock cycle, so as the shock compresses it moves soft to stiff, while digressive is the opposite, the initial compression is stiff and as the shock compresses becomes softer.

    Most traditional shocks are progressive.

EDIT: My kings feel pretty normal on the road, nothing to brag about but they come into their own at high speeds. The shocks are soft and controlled over high speed obstacles.

I was in the same boat... I read, and read, and read some more. I had money burning a hole in my pocket. I eventually settled for 6112/5160s, Camburg UCAs (which may have been a mistake, but I don't plan to go higher than 2"), and Wheeler's 3-AAL pack for my 2019 DCSB OR. I've been down a similar road before with my TJ. A good friend of mine spent a fortune on a long-arm kit for his Rubicon only to discover that a Sport with gears, TruTracs, and a solid sort-arm kit would go anywhere (or most anywhere?) he could go... IMHO....

To hang with the boys on Saturday, you need:

    1) Good ground clearance (suspension lift and tires)
    2) Good tires (33s will get you into plenty of problems)
    3) Good gearing and lockers
    4) A good winch with recovery gear (strap and snatch block)

Everything else is icing on the cake. And don't forget these famous last words, "I gotta driving this thing home." If you ain't driving it home, then you prolly don't got one of them der fancy rigs with all the goodies and creature comforts to include airbags found on a Gen3 Tacoma. That'd be more like my ole 66' and 75' Bronco... and in that case... "Airbags? WTF? Who needs them?"

    "We die like real men."

    ;-)
