    Hey,

If I start my truck and want to get out and run into the house, store, etc. I haven't been able to lock it while it's running. I figured it was a setting I could change, but haven't found anything in the manual.

So, is there a way I can lock the truck while it's running?

    Thanks.

Have you tried taking the door key from the fob and using it to lock the door while keeping the fob outside with you?

Are you leaving the key fob in the truck?

Nope. I keep the fob in my pocket. I assume it's some type of safety feature....

NO. your truck can still drive away even without the key nearby. Used to do it all the time at the dealership to go put gas in them. There is NO security feature. Please be careful of where you leave your truck running.

I haven't... If that's the only way, then it would be a huge pain in the ass.

Well, that sucks. Sounds like you may have worked at a Toyota dealership. Do you know why they made it this way? Seems strange that you can't lock your truck in this situation.

Yea, if it's not locked, I don't leave it. So far, the only tests have been in my driveway while trying to figure it out. No chance I'm leaving this puppy alone, running, and unlocked.

I used to trick my Subaru by power locking while running, unlock the lock manually, open the door, lock the door manually by sliding the lock. Walk away.

Also you can open the door, press the courtesy switch, power lock the door, then shut it.

I havent tried to leave the taco running yet but I have noticed there's no smart key sensor on the freaking passenger side, its retarded.

The only way to do it that I've found is leaving the fob in the truck and removing the key to physically lock the drivers door with. If you just lock in and then close it the truck will unlock itself.

Why do you need to leave it running? A/C or heater? If so then a remote start would be the answer.

Agreed! It would have probably cost Toyota a couple bucks to add it and it's such a huge benefit to the owner. I open the door for my wife when she rides with me, so I always have to end up using the fob anyways. First world problems... But still.

Makes sense I guess, but a lot of my other vehicles would let the vehicle lock while fob is outside the cabin. It would stay running for 20 min, then shut off. Was a really nice feature.

Nothing in particular. Just a feature I used for a few situations in my other vehicles that made it nice. Leaving dogs in the cabin ( They ride in the bed now), hot day, etc. little things like that.

Sounds like I got my answer. Thanks all, not a big deal... It just threw me off since my other vehicles allowed it.

You can lock the truck, take the manual key out of the key fob and lock the door with it.

How is this any different than a car with a regular key? If you leave the car running with the key in it, I don't think you'd want to lock it haha.

I have not tried this with the tacoma but when I worked at a Toyota dealer, the porters left vehicles running accidentally, and they ran all night til they were out of gas. Again, I don't know if the technology has changed in the last 2 years but that is my experience. I won't leave the truck running unless it is in eye sight

My friend tested this on day 1 or 2 of me owning it....it will stay running indefinitely without the key, once it is started. (gas permitting)

Same for me. I started my truck got out and had my buddy get in. He took off down the street with the key in my hand standing there. I felt like I was robbed, luckily he's my best friend and came back. He said it did start beeping saying no key detected. But it kept driving. Will try the manual key trick soon.

Hey DeTaco... You can go into the settings and make ALL doors unlock with 1 push of the FOB or 1 touch on the driver's door handle, which I prefer...... That is how I have mine now... the double click thing drove me crazy cuz had to whip out your FOB...!!!!!

None of the mfg vehicles do that. If you leave your house and truely forget the fob at home, the engine will run until you shut it off.

If you're driving on the road and your engine shuts down because your fob is not there, you lose vac on the brakes and steering.... IIHS doesn't want to add to the fatality stats.

I guess for us guys that live in cities with a million plus population leaving a vehicle running and unattended is virtually unheard of.

If I'm with a buddy listening to a game on the radio and need to go to an ATM I instinctively turn off the truck and take keys. I always get shit about doing that. Habits die hard.

But changing the door locks to one click has been awesome.
