Certainly can and do, but no different with a key or smart key. In that situation, probably just needed to hold it up to the button, some interference in the area probably.

Do you need to know, or care?
Yes, but they also have a clutch lock-out..see the correlation?

The only interference in the easters Sierra was a hungry bear, some chipmunks, and my wife.... When I got back to Mammoth Lake to exchange the car they told me I'm not the first. Probably bad quality of the electronics. No problems with the Tacoma though.

But did you try holding it to the button while pushing it?

In a Cruze there is a hole in the console that you put the key into. This will read the RFID chip and allow engine to start

Most GMs have a similar setup

Shucks that doesn't sound fun. That is my main issue, what if my wireless key just doesn't recognize my truck and I had no way to charge/replace the battery in my FOB (still don't know what FOB stands for) and I couldn't start the truck.

You can try this yourself. Remove the battery from the fob, you can still start the truck, hold the fob up to the button while you push it.

Interesting, but I guess we'll never know if that would have done the trick for him.

Don't hold the fob up near the button, actually push the button with the dead fob.

This was one of the reasons I went with the MT, although it was way down the list. I have had negative experiences with 2 push to start cars (non-Toyotas). One occured in 100F heat, the other in -30. Both cases were key related, not battery or otherwise.

In both cases, the vehicle would not respond and it took a return trip the next day to get the vehicle started, presumably after the temperature returned to a more moderate range. In either case, I would have been in trouble if I was somewhere remote. To me, the push button start is one more thing that can go wrong and leave you stranded when it does.

smashed this, broke that, covered it up with tape and paint
too bad there isnt a way to get the stealership to take your push button start out and put in a normal key entry start

have them put something in the report/warranty ledger like "starter is broken and needs replacement" and then have them put in the key'd starter :p

i genuinely have the same worry in my head though that im gonna walk out one morning and the truck just wont start cause of that button

not to mention there is no finessing the key to get the truck to start when something is acting wonky
