It seems a used SUV roof rack, complete with hardware, can be had for cheap on CL/EB; much cheaper than an aftermarket Yakima/Thule rack.

Are you using a roof rack on your shell that came off a XTerra/Volvo/Jeep Grand Cherokee/Tahoe/Subaru or any other vehicle?
Where did it come from and are you happy with it?

I'm sure with a little ingenuity, anything will work.

I think mine came off a chev blazer $10 also, works and looks good for the last 5 yrs.
Just have to cut the bars to make it fit, and make sure you place the feet on the canopy reinforcing; strongest areas. I also ran bolts through a continuos metal strip on the inside.
    Cheers

How do you tell which part of the canopy is reinforced?

I plan to run a 3rd gen 4Runner roof rack on my 1st gen Tacoma extended cab Leer shell. The tracks could not fit the contour any better it is sweet. I will order a hardware kit from Yakima though.

I have an ARE camper also, and picked up 2 Pathfinder racks today for $50. I intend to eventually mount one of the racks over the cab as well. For the camper shell rack I took 8" off. I haven't attached it yet since I want to take the shell off before measurements and drilling. It's just laying up there for the pic.IMG_20170430_193207217_HDR.jpg
