Putting 2021 Power seat into a 2017

No matter what I tried (the $100 seat jackers and/or rear spacers) that seat was never comfortable.
For me, $100 and a couple of hours labor was well worth it.
Even if I never touch those buttons again, driving is much more comfortable and I now have the option to easily change the seat settings at any time.

 

So it's just a simple bolt up if you find a complete seat and run power?
Guess i'm starting my search.

I actually like non power. My Tacoma hasn't moved but a few times in 7 years. The few times the wife drove it, I know exactly how to get it back in a second or two. The power seat in my Tundra is okay. Really messes with me when the wife drives it, much more difficult to get it back, slow and all the positions. Maybe memory seating would be better, but I'd like it better without power.

Just me though.

 

All that was needed in my 2017 was to run a 30 amp fused wire to IE5-1 and ground wire to IE5-2. The air bag and seat belt connectors were compatible. There was one other wired plug on the '17, but its receptacle on the seat had no wires connected to it. Maybe for factory heated seats? Mine are aftermarkets added at the dealer.

 

For anyone duplicating it, the circuit is there to add the required 30 amp fuse WITHOUT running a wire from the cab to the battery.

 

great job it looks awesome, ive been considering doing the same to my truck its also a 17 sport with heated seats, how difficult of an install was it? the mounting isnt my main worry mostly the way it fits and if the wiring to hook up heated seat is a pain, also since you did this i imagine you know whether there is already wiring pre installed for power seat or did you have to get a harness to hook it up.

currently trying to figure out if this is something i can do myself or if im better off getting the parts and knowledge and getting it installed at a shop, any input would be greatly appreciated, i have no problem paying to get the seat and wiring just concerned it will turn out to be a waste of time and not worth it.

 

The mounts are the same.
My heated seats were a dealer add-on so it had its own harness/connector. The was a blank connector that had no wires hooked up. that might be for the factory-heated seats.
The airbag was deployed on the power seat. I used the foam and fabric from my '17 so the heat grids went with it.

One other thing to check is to make sure the 'new' seat back frame is not bent. The lumbar support mechanism is not easily moved over.

 

Oh okay thats good to know thank you, my heated werent a add on but came factory installed, i assume youre from the states or somewhere theyre built slightly different, good to know there is a blank connector though ill have to keep that all in mind when i look into this further, have you had any issues with it since you installed it? i would probably just hunt for a seat that already has power and heated so i can avoid swapping things in and out as much as possible, i plan to get catskinz anyways so fabric cover isnt a concern either.

Did you have to disconnect the battery when unplugging and plugging back the harnesses?

 

You don't have to. But it's always a good idea

 

I'm still unsure on wiring for power and ground. Is done by using a T tap connector and adding a fuse tap to an existing fuse? Any help would be appreciated as I am trying to do this install this weekend.

 

T-tap for a 30 amp circuit...Hmmm

I just got back from my annual 800-mile RT to a car show. This seat made the trip much more comfortable than the past trips. No leg cramping or pain.

 

Ended up doing this to my 2018. figured to give people some more info that i found out.
Overall $300 for a seat out of a wreck thanks to @MaverickT883 for locating for me. this seat is a powered and heated version from a 2023 that ate a moose.
overall, a bit of mold started and wasnt in the greatest shape but was more of a test for me to see if i can get by with a drop-in seat or if i'd have to get a bucket or something.

some rebuild photos;

fully stripped off the OEM fabric covering, tossed into the wash to clean and kill off anything still left attached to it.

Bare metal frame.

Foam got taken off and washed with an extra helping of bleach spray to kill off the developing mold.

Seperated the heating element from the fabric seat and soaked it in bleach, cleaned up really nicely after letting it air dry for a few days. (sprayed it a day after to get anything that might have survived.)



the metal wire hook loops are a proper pain for reassembly. ended up cutting off a few rings and attaching zip-ties that i looped and melted the tips to keep in place



Wiring reattached.





The heated seat element plug will slot directly into a 2018 OEM manual heated seat harness in the truck. In my case, only had to provide 2 wires, a power and ground, to the big 6 wire pigtail. the rest of it was isolated and taped back into the new loom i created. just needed to disconnect it separately from the wireloom on the seat. I rean the new power and ground to the fusepanel that i built next to the battery. Technically this system is always on and isn't key'ed off. I plan to change this a bit in the future.

 

Is it possible to order a new seat from Toyota? Is it cost prohibitive or are parts just not available?

 

So when i called Toyota parts (mind you this is in CAD) you can't get a fully assembled seat apparently.
the seat frame is separate - Yota quoted me $750 for it.
the lower foam is separate - Yota quoted me $150
the upper foam is separate - Yota quoted me about $150
the lower fabric is separate - i'm not even kidding you quoted me $560. for the fabric covering....
and the upper fabric is separate - $700 ish.

The entire thing is absurd to buy "new"

For that much money, i can spare a few dollars in bleach and cleaning agents to clean up and fix the old seat.... Only thing worth getting would be new cushions as for $300 for a set of brand new ones isn't terrible of a price

 

Wow, $1300 for the fabric is about the cost of katzkin leather. $300 for new foam is fair though.

 

I did this on my 17, very happy with being able to lower the seat as I’m a genetic mutant, 6’2” tall but only 30” inseam.
