I'm looking into putting 33s on my 07 Tacoma sr5 automatic and I was wondering if regearing was necessary.

Welcome to the site! Alot of this depends on how your truck is currently set up (topper/shell/heavy gear) and what your end goal is.

my 09 is on 285/75/17 with a topper, AARB winch bumper and a 12k winch up front, and automatic, not re geared, now mind you it's no tire slayer, but it seems just fine.

but i do drop the Auto into 3rd gear on longer hills because my truck likes to park itself nice and low in the Rev range

I’ve known people with 33” 285/70/17 C on stock gearing

    manual is 3.73

It’s commonly said the Tacoma is poorly geared stock from the factory to begin with.
In comparison, my last regular sedan came with 4.10.

I only have a topper on my truck, and I only plan to slap on some 33s, skid plates, and rock sliders, maybe a c4 front bumper.

You should be fine. If you desire more performance, 4.10's would get you back to the OEM gearing, while 4.56's would give a little "over gear" for better low end.

depends on you. there are guys running 35" tires without a regear. their truck is very slow, and drinks gas like crazy, but they are ok with that.

you should be ok without a regear, just your truck will dowshift more often on hills.

also, try to get the most light wheels that you can get. that makes a diffrence. no need to get 65lbs e-load tires.

If you're unhappy with the performance after getting larger tires, get a tune. It'll help, but the proper way is regearing.

I'll be moving to 255/80/17 Wildpeaks, I don't plan to regear in the near future, but I do plan on getting OTT Tuned. I'm 6MT though so a little different.

    Also note:
285/70/17 is more like 32.7" and 11.22" wide
285/75/17 is around 33.8" and the same width

255/80/17 is just over 33" and about 10" wide.

These numbers vary by manufacturer as well.
