i'll have to think about that one. buying a diamond very soon, so that takes priority, but i've gotten comfortable enough/enough practice with the phantom that i'm outflying the stock transmitter (from a range standpoint). it'd be interesting trying to figure out how to hook up all of the DJI features to that thing........

I've read of guys swapping out with the stock gear for spektrum gear... you'd also need a spektrum receiver but as far as I know the conversion is well within your skillset

i've seen a lot of videos with guys flying phantoms with aftermarket tx/rx, i just haven't researched how to hook everything up. the two sticks would be easy i'm sure. it's getting the two toggle switches on the factory setup that control the flight modes to work properly.....

I'm having sooooo much fun with my MXQ. Getting better all the time although it's still difficult. How much does it cost to build your own, which would be capable of carrying at least a GoPro and gimble? Ballpark figure? You think a DIY would be better than a Phantom?

asuming the same principals catty over from the RCs with wheels side of the hobby (or most hobbies for that matter), building your own has the potential to be much better, but rarely will cost the same or less than a RTF.

Hm. Not necessarily the body, motors and blades, but the electronics, eh? Is that the main $$ expenditure?

EDIT: So, Colin, would you have built your own rather than bought the Phantom, assuming money was no option?

if i get another one down the road, whether it be another quad, or a hex, or octo, i'll probably build it. but being my first serious one, i'm glad i got a ready to fly one as my start into the multirotor area of the RC hobby. technically, it was my second one, but i don't count the little 1sq. it's the highest quality mini one i've seen, but it's not much more than a toy for rainy/windy days.

tossed the phantom up in the air real quick over the weekend diuring a short break from wheeling just to show mark and his roommate how it worked, and set the gopro to take pictures every few seconds. first time i've used it for anything other than video, and i am happy with the result. you can see the nose of the awe-inspiring torspd turbo truck sticking out of the garage.

Finally did a little fpv flying! I am hooked on it! Picking up a wide angle lens for the camera soon. And when I get a way to record the video I will toss a vid or so up.
Weight without battery is 28.7 grams.. camera is only 3.9 grams.
