There is no point for ford to spend that kind on money on a ford frame replacement ... get my drift.

It sounds like there are several possible reasons for the 'tick', including fuel injectors, exhaust leaks, pinging, valvetrain noise and the aluminum block. Glad I asked, now I have a better idea of things to look out for.

    Thanks!

I guess if your trying to say that Fords don't last that long, then I get. Otherwise, I'm not sure what you're trying to say...

that was the 3.0 that had the faulty oil pumps and caused the sludge problem, not the 4.0. i had the dealership replace my 3.0 in my old lexus for free after i heard about the problem. i have never heard of this for a 4.0 to be honest.

A buddy of mine had the leaf spring bracket rust completely off a 5 year old ford explorer. Ford told him stuff crap and it cost him several hundred dollars to fix.

Love my tacoma, though i will have to say the 5VZ-FE (the old 3.4L v6) was probably the most bullet proof.... but the 4.0L's extra power and use of timing changes instead of belts makes it much better IMO.

Either way its a toyota, i plan to easily get 200k out of mine without issue... couldnt say the same thing for the chevy that my 2013 taco replaced.

Watch out for the 2005 and 2006 (maybe 2007 too, not positive) 4.0 engines! they have bad head gaskets and will leak coolant into the #4 and #6 cylinders. Apparently they updated the head gaskets in 07 or 08. The taco i bought had the head gasket go at at least 175k (first documented sign of symptoms), and he was driving it like that till i bought it at 217k. There also is an engine on Craigslist in my area that was pulled from an 05 taco at 128k due to the same exact issue. Cost from toyota is just over $3000 to do head gaskets on this truck.

Definitely be aware of this, because all the machanics ive talked to (which is several) and the people on here didnt mention that before i bought mine, even when i threw out a "what to look for" post before i got it. Not blaming anyone here, it is just weird that this is common for 05's yet no one talks about it.Dont believe me? Google "tacoma cylinder 4 misfire" and youll see tons of posts on this exact issue.

Also look for broken motor mounts on the rusty frames, and dont be too alarmed by the noisy engine, it's normal. if the tranny shifts hard, you can try a fluid change and it apparently makes a big difference. Other than that, these trucks seem to be pretty great.

I have my 4.0 apart in the garage now (217k on it), and everything still looks great aside from the head gasket. ill get her back together and am confident she'll go another 100k at least with standard mainentance.

Thank you very much for your reply. A quick search turned up several posts about the head gasket issue with these engines just like you described. Very useful information to have while considering buying a used truck. Will also be looking at motor mounts. Glad to hear that your engine looks good inside, hope it runs another 100k+ for you.
