Question about Cat removal and CEL

Much more but i will keep it simple.
    Wondering if a post cat O2 sensor spacer would get rid of a CEL when the Cat is removed? Looking in to a removable test pipe for running the rig most of the time due to heat on the floor inside with the cat installed. It will have flanges to put it back in for emissions. I cant deal with a CEL when its out tho. Id love to keep it stock but due to space i cant heat shield it and you cant header wrap a cat to cut down on heat.

    The motor is a 00 3rz from a standard cab 4wd tacoma.

    Anyone know how to avoid this?

    it would sound and run like shit without your cat. engines need back-pressure....

    My cat is fine and im not doing it for more power im doing it to cut down on heat. I cant wrap it and the spot it has to be in is so tight i cant even fit a heat shield. If i ditch it and put a flanged test pipe in the heat goes down cause the pipe will not heat up as much as the cat and it will have room so my floor and tranny are not getting hot. The flanges will allow for it to be run and then come emissions time bolt it back in. A high flow cat wont be any smaller and can still throw a cat eff. Code...

    The amount of back pressure that will be changed by having it out will be taken care of by the re routing of the exhaust. loosing the cat isnt going to make it much louder with the exhaust i have. Its plenty restrictive and quiet. A little louder and i will be ok. but the cats not going to make it run any worse for the reasons givin...If that much back pressure change made it run like crap then bigger piping or a header or a different muffler would also do it. Where it will run like shit is when the CEL comes on and the ecu gets a hard code for a bad cat because its gone....and thats why id liek to avoid it.





    Im looking for an answer to the question...How do i avoid a CEL when removing the cat? Will an O2 spacer that pulls the O2 out of the exhaust stream solve this issue. Im not removing it cause i want power or sound im removing it due to the heat it creates in a tight space thats heatting up my transmission and my floor and anything that's sitting on the floor, Its heating up my front Driveshaft and Ujoints and causeing them to wear early or drip the grease out because its braking down in the heat.

    Personally I strongly suggest not doing this. If you want to decrease the heat from the cat, consider modifying the exhaust to reroute it low enough to put in a heat shield. The catalytic converter is there for a purpose. Removing the cat defeats that purpose. No I am not a tree-hugger, but I do care about the environment that my grandkids have to grow up in.

    Thanks for the advice. I believe even removing the cat on this truck will polite less then the carbed 22r that had visible smoke and a big webber on it. I upgraded the 87 to all 00 running gear. I'd love to keep the cat but if I can't cut the heat down its going to cause problems. Running the cat lower is t an option cause it would be below the skid plate for the tcase and that's the lowest par under the truck. It's primary use is wheeling so that would be a stupid move. Crossing under and then putting it all on the drivers side isn't an option cause I used the taco fuel lines and it would then be a tight fit and unwrapable next to fuel lines. I have the option to remove it and trick the ecu or spend 1000s to figure a way to cool the tranny, floor and busings that are melting and being replaced prematurely.

    I forgot all about those. I will call em and see if this is a sure fire fix. I was hoping a lower cost option like an o2 spacer would do it or shield the o2.

    If your catalytic converter is getting that hot, then it probably has an internal problem. I haven't seen anyone with a properly working cat complain about the heat.

    As far as pollution, it's your truck, but I always say the best way to fix something is fix it right. Removing a catalytic converter will never cause a vehicle to pollute LESS.

    The heat isn't anymore then what a normal cat puts off. Because its above my tcase skid on an 87 there is no room to heat shield it to the cab. It's way closer the it would have been on the Tacoma. It's less then an inch away from all sides pretty much. There isn't another place to put it. Crossing the pipe over under the tranny opens up a list of potential issues for a crawler and I'd have the same issue on the other side except I'd have fuel lines to add to the mess. I don't think they make a smaller cat that will be efficient enough to not throw the cat efficacy code that I'm trying to stop by removing it. So the question everyone wants to avoid is still there even with a smaller cat potentially. Would I like to keep it in place if I had another option yes. I'm scared its going to be loud, do I have to deal with it to avoid melting my floor and what I set on it... Yeah.

    What I ha said is my 3rz swapped truck with out a cat probably pollutes less then the trucks original condition being an 87 carbed truck with a bad carb, visible smoke, and who knows the milage on the motor.

    So lets get back on topic here. If removing the cat for off road use can the o2 spacer fix the problem too? The o2 sim is a good idea but 109$ for the light to be gone is higher then I would like to spend. $50 for a spacer seems like a better deal to me.

    The spacer pulls the O2 sensor out of the exhaust stream. In many cases it allows the computer to think that the cat is there, and working efficiently. It is not 100% guarantee though.

    Yeah kinda what in starting to think. Maybe I will grab the sim and just do it. It's a sure bet I'm told.

    I put a catback in my 2002 2.7 got cel almost rite away
    URD signal whatyamaclllit no problems since
    even with long tube headers after market cat 3 different mufflers never a O2 code (till I busted the O2 sensor):D

    Perfect! My truck is hardly used but its one of those things i rather not deal with when i do drive it. i have put 16k on it in a little over 3 years. I got a 2nd car last year so now i drive it to the gym once a week or take it to dinner or whatever from time to time.
