Hey guys, I wonder if someone out there might provide for me a little clarification on the ground wire that attaches to the airbag via a single, small female spade connector.

My truck is a 2014 base, 2.7, 5-speed, access, 4x4. It had no options at all except for the rubber floor. That is to say, i had no int. wipers, cruise control, back up camera, nothing like that.

A few months ago I added cruise, and it all went smoothly, the truck was pre wired, and the install was fairly simple. I ordered the cruise switch wire and it came like this:

The 3 prong plug on the left goes to the cruise stalk and the square 4 prong goes to the spiral cable.

Originally my truck had only 1 wire coming out of the square 4 prong plug from the spiral cable, that was the ground at the back of the airbag, the one that attached via the female spade. So what I did was de-pin that ground wire from the original plug and added it to the new plug at the same terminal. Essentially ended up with #9 in the following diagram.

Everything works fine, cruise, horn, and cruise dash light. So now the confusion...

I plan to add steering wheel controls soon and the new spiral cable to go with them, but I noticed the SWCs have included in their wiring a single female spade, which I assume is the ground that goes to the airbag.

So I'm guessing I remove the ground spade from the cruise wiring harness and use the one from the SWCs? Anyone have any thougts? Sorry if this is not very clear.

all airbag wires are completely enclosed, there is no loose ground.

that loose spade connector in the picture above looks like the horn wire

Yeah, I think you are right. I do recall reading that the spade had something to do with the horn.

would it matter if I connected the spade from the SWC or the spade from the cruise control harness? Would it work the same either way?

I would guess to err on the side of using the spade form the SWC.

I think I figured it out.

I'll bet if your truck had factory cruise but NO steering wheel controls, you got the cruise harness with the extra wire and spade connector, like #9 on the diagram. But if your truck came from the factory WITH steering wheel controls, you got the simple 2 wire cruise harness like the one in the very first picture.

I think I'll most likely de-pin the spade from the cruise harness when I install the wheel controls.

    Weldo,

How did you connect the SWC to your radio? Did you use a PAC or another adapter? Reason I am asking, I am trying to install SWC (From 2014 Toyota Tacoma) to a base cab (2012 Toyota Tacoma) and the wiring harness does not support SWC; meaning, the clockspring connectors (original wiring harness) won't support the wiring pins from the SWC. Therefore, I purchased a PAC-SWI adapter and am not sure which wires from the SWC to connect to the adapter. I was hoping you had success on this area and if you could fill me/us in that would be great. Thanks!

    -Brent
