So I took my new 2014 Tacoma in for its first oil change at 2800 miles. I got a 6 pack of Mobil 1 5w-30 at Costco for 28 bucks and brought it with. I know I get Toyotacare free for 36,000 miles and that includes oil. But I want to run full synthetic.

The person managing the service dept told me that the oil that Toyota puts in Tacomas in 2014 is the SAME oil as Mobil 1, and that I wasted my money getting my own oil. But I thought Toyota put conventional 5w-30 in 2014 Tacomas with the 4.0l v6?

Is it true? Is the recommended oil Toyota puts in 2014 4.0L Tacomas re-branded Mobil 1 full synthetic?

If they are putting in toyota 0w-20 out of bottles, then that is full synthetic like mobil one and last i checked on bobistheoilguy, it is also an exxon product.

More than likely the oil they use for the free service is bulk oil and you would have to look on the side of the drum to know what they are using. Next time ask him if you can look at what type of oil it is.

Must vary by country. Asked the same question, got same answer *except* that yes, comes bulk in barrels and *no* way in hell you can look at our barrels, little peon. Go F* off was the 'tude I got.

Screw the dealerships - change it yourself & get it done right.

Dealers source their oil from local suppliers. They buy whatever they get the best deal on. One dealer will use Castrol; another will use Valvoline, etc.

What follows may be a little off-topic, but something I've been running into lately. My 2015 Tacoma is not due just yet for the first 5K service, but I decided to call ahead and get a feel for what I "think" I'm going to get.

The tire rotation is a given.

The oil cap on the 2nd Gen Tacoma calls for 5W-30. Nowhere in my owners manual is a requirement for synthetic specified. With that said, you would think I would get oil/filter change at 5K. I called the dealer I bought truck from and spoke with a female service rep. She was clueless and after prodding from me said I would get oil/filter change at 5K. I called back later and was connected to a different person. The guy said no oil/filter at 5K for 2015 Tacoma. He claimed it came from factory with synthetic and didn't need changing 'til 10K. The newer 4 Runners come from the factory with synthetic oil - 0W-20, but I do not believe the Tacoma's come with 5W-30 synthetic.

I then did the same with 2 other dealers in my area and the story was like it was at the dealer I purchased truck at.....all over the place.

I've never been a fan of dealership service depts. and will therefore change my own oil and rotate my own tires. It ain't worth the grief.

This shows the engine, model, year, oil capacity and intervals for oil changes, They will give you an oil change every 5,000 miles, and I think it is 5 changes, so that should be 30,000 if you change your oil at 5,000 miles, or 6 months. The table is a little lengthy but if you take the time to read it, and make a copy of it to take with you I'm sure it will help with your servicing. I believe you have the 1gr-fe engine.

See that's the thing. When you buy new, you get the first 32 or 36k miles of oil changes and service for free. And I think that includes the diffs and tranny at 30k miles.

My dealer was really cool and changed mine at 2600 miles for free because of the Toyotacare.

I think I'll continue bringing in my own oil. But after the Toyotacare is done..I'll be doing the oil changes myself for sure. It sure looks like its easy on this Tacoma

Toyota Care is only good up to 25K.

Conventional oil vehicles should get 5 oil/filter changes and 5 tire rotations.

Synthetic oil vehicles get 2 oil/filter changes and 5 tire rotations.

Your 2600 mile oil change was gratis. It had nothing to do with Toyota Care.

You shouldn't be running full synthetic at 2600 miles. The engine isn't fully broken in.

    I've heard the same thing.

Compare a bottle of WS to a bottle of Mobil oil..... Same container.

    This is the best answer.

Now as far as which product and unless you're doing some severe driving, use AMSOIL or Royal Purple. Both have the longest drains in the business = best bang for your buck with superior protection.

I used to work at a stealership, and they buy their oil in bulk, as-in 55 gallon drums of it. If you specifically want Mobil 1, then YOU have to do it yourself. I would not trust them to put it in.

I changed oil at 2500, similar to the OP. I was willing to get my own Mobil 1 at my expense and bring it to them. The dealer assured me their 5w30 bulk was full synthetic, no need to worry. The next oil change I brought my own. There was a noticeable difference in the color. When it was brought to there attention they said Toyota called for regular oil and that's what they used on the first oil change. They lied! Moral of the story, buy what oil YOU want to use and WATCH them put it in! Hope this helps.

Not true. Many vehicles come from the factory with synthetic oil as the initial fill, including my 2014 Miata.

The dealership I work at sells mobil 1 in bottles to the vehicles that require it or to customers that request it. The only problem is that they pay over 12 bucks per quart. Yikes. I can't believe how many people are willing to pay that price. There is a Walmart about a mile away that sells 5 quart jugs for about 25 dollars. Crazy.

Well. To each his/her own. Hate to be Captain Obvious, But I know from doing many, many (I'm at over 226,000 km now) oil changes that:

    1. They are dead easy to do
    2. They are satisfying to do because you KNOW it's done right
    3. They ARE covered in warranty if you DIY, no matter what some douche at the dealership lies about. You in the USA are covered by an actual Act of Law.
    4. It's a great way to learn more about your vehicle and try different oils / specs & record the results. Science!
    So much Win!

Or, you could take "care Bear" or whatever Toyota Care is, and hope some 18 yo kid remembers to actually change the D3 oil filter. When you guys/gals let the dealer change it, you DO mark the filter before hand with a mark to check that...., right?
You'd be amazed how many places don't change it because they figure Joe Average can't find the hood latch.

As for oil - 5W30 got me to 226,000 km. SN grade Dino or synthetic - who knows what did it. SURE WASN'T FROM THE DEALERSHIP.
