I too worked at a dealer. I saw on way more than one occasion where a customer would bring in there own nice, Expensive oil. The tech working on the car would then use the conventional bulk oil, and keep the nice customer oil for his personal collection...never putting it in the car. Dealers can't be trusted. period.

So has anyone yet noticed if you want to know it was done correctly using the oil type you want you have to do it yourself?

It is not true. The recommended oil for 2014 4.0L Tacomas is 5W-30 conventional, at 5000 mile intervals. Read the manual (page 536). That is what the dealer will use for your ToyotaCare changes.

So you give the dealer the oil you bought and ask them to put it in your Tacoma... Good luck with that! My bet would be on one of those 'mechanics' putting that in their own vehicle and yours gets the stock oil the dealership buys bulk.

Yea I think if you read the Toyotacare fine print and then the instruction manual for the 4.0L V6 Taco, it calls for regular non-synthetic oil to be changed every 5000 miles.

So I was kind of surprised to hear the dealer say they would use the 'same' oil as Mobil 1. From what I saw in there, they had 3 big 300 gallon bulk shuttles of different kinds of oil....

    Glad I brought my own.

I have been hearing it from industry professionals since the invention of synthetics. Since those sources number over 100 I will go with what seems to be an established fact.

Motors that are not designed for it should not use it until after break in or the rings do not seat. That's been proven.

The dealer told me they run a semi synthetic from Kendall. But I run Mobil 1 ever since

Free is free(Tacoma Care) and I happen to think my Toyota dealership is a 10/10 shop. When it runs out after 2 years it will be time to do my own.
The dealer principal has been a good friend for years and I trust him much when he told me that they are using Mobil 1 in the new Tacoma's.
He knows I am loyal to Mobil 1

My truck came with 0w20 synthetic, new. I offered, and was more than willing to buy Mobil 1, 5w30 at my expense. THEY told me the bulk oil that specific dealer used was full synthetic, just as good as Mobil 1. 1st oil change, their oil. It got very dirty at around 4000 mi. It used 1/8 quart between 4000 and 5000 mi. Second oil change, my Mobil 1. Watched them put it in. Very clean at 5000 mi, NO oil consumption. When questioned, they admitted their bulk oil was dino oil, NOT synthetic. I no longer use that dealer for anything. If you buy Mobil 1 for your truck, watch them put it in. Hope this helps.

    meh. lots.
I'm glad you have a good relationship with your dealer.

But there is no such thing as free. You either paid for those 5 changes in a higher sale price; or you WILL pay when they get you with the subsequent "big" service items (which anyone can do: transmission oil change, rear & front diff oil changes, T-case oil changes, Coolant changes, spark plug changes).

I've done all of those, some I even have old write ups from other forums if you are interested.

As an example of you WILL pay: the ridiculous cabin air filter at $32 and then "labour" to put it in (it goes in right behind the glove box). for a total exceeding $50. Prices in CAN $.

But back to oil. Even asking for empty jugs in truck bed does not mean the oil in said jugs went into your engine; and my limited experience with Toyota dealerships (since I'm a DIYer) is that they are not too keen on Joe Civilian being under a lift in the service bay watching the tech. in fact, has anyone actually successfully done exactly that? Demanded to watch a tech do an oil change? How did that go over?

Is this really a problem? Mechanics so morally bankrupt as to actually steal the oil you bring, going as far as to have containers on standby? Does everyone look the other way when they witness techs marching out at the end of the day cradling their synthetic booty?

They wouldn't let me UNDER the truck, but, I was able to watch through the back (open) door when they put MY Mobil 1 in. The point.... I didn't TRUST them. If,,, I don't trust them then,,,, they don't get MY business! I found there are others more than willing! For the record, I did believe them on synthetic's because they are also a GM dealer, who requires Mobil 1 in most of their oil changes. Hope this helps.

Empty jugs in bed would not prove the oil went in your engine. They could easily empty your synthetic into another jug(s) and then place your empty synthetic jugs in the bed.

People who take their own synthetic oil to a dealer drive out with conventional oil in the engine.

Lol Synthetic booty! OMG post of the day! Thank you as I choke on my beer! Thinking silicone and bouncing Thursdays on Chive, here....

Is it a problem?? Who knows. I don't. I prob. shouldn't comment as there is no fucking way I'd let some kid fuck with my truck for an OIL CHANGE.

    But hey, it's "free"
