Question about diff breather mod - why 2 way?

Bryan, it is the same breather (2 way) that Toyota puts on the end of the tube for the front differential. That one is in the engine compartment, below the fuse box. If it is okay to have one there (where I know it gets real dusty), then why do you worry about the back one being where I or others located it? For dust to migrate down a 5 foot tube from a tiny opening would be a non-issue compared to the shorter run to the front differential or ADD (the other breather tube goes to).

 

You're still over complicating it.

This is a picture of the stock diff breather end caps.

Fully capped to prevent debris from getting in.
But again - if you sink this end cap under water, it'll still allow water in, regardless.

If you feel the need to prevent even the smallest of particles getting in, then put a filter on the end and route it up into your gas filler neck like this guy did.

Hey David. Thanks for the reply. I worry because a lot of the pro vids on the matter recommend/show filters on the end, something Pirahna Offroad brings up in this video. It makes sense. Too bad I can't find a similar kit in the US.

I don't know whats on the trucks stock breather, I've never gotten down and looked. But just from my professional opinion, I'd be more worried about water being sucked in through the seals by a 1-way then i'd be worried about slight dust migrating down a 5 foot length of breather hose. I've seen vaccum implode 40 ft tall tanks with only a few PSI difference on them, its a powerful force. If your that worried about dust, then spend 3$ on a filter.

 

I'm doing the Diff Breather mod in a few weeks and I'm not going to be putting on a Toyota breather. I'm going to run a line all the way to the engine bay and place a breather filter on instead.

 

Not to jack this thread, but is it normal to hear a slight hiss when you loosen the plug on a warm rear diff?

Well you might of have had a slight vacuum if the diff cools quickly the breather will close.

I don't think it's a problem.

riddle me this, how does water get into your diff if it is a one way breather?

that is the whole reason to do this...

 

It creates a vacuum and your seals will pull in water. The seal is only designed to keep oil in so if you dunk your rear end in deep water your breather closes and your seals will suck in water.

Happened to me!

 

I was at Off Road Warehouse today (Escondido) and they have these from K&N for the valve cover vents... two sizes, the smaller was 1/2"... looked just like this one... they are small and could fit over the extended breather or with a barb coupling, on the end of the tube without the factory breather.

Where'd you get those stateside? I've been looking for exactly those, but the only place I can find them is Australian dealers.
