So i have a 2017 TRD OR with push to start. I have noticed that if i leave the engine running and exit the vehical there is no way to lock or unlock the doors. Here are the steps to reproduce the problem:
    1. start the engine
    2. leaving the engine running open the door and exit the vehical
    3. attempt to lock or unlock the doors using the drivers door handle (for me this does not work)
    4. attempt to lock or unlock the doors using the buttons on the key fob (this also does not work for me)

does everyone else with push to start have this problem?

also not as big a deal but still annoying
if i have the truck set to unlock all doors when the drivers door is opened it will do this fine if i stop the engine then open the door, but if i happen to open the door before stopping the engine it will not unlock the other doors. does everyone else see this as well?

As far as locking, I use the key. Don't think there is another option.

and this works for you if you leave the truck running?

btw, if you have push to start you can touch forward outer part of the drivers door handle it will lock all the doors.

Works fine, other than the annoying beep as you walk away from a the locked running truck with the keys. Would like to know how to disable that. The door handle touch only works for me if truck is shut down in park, keys on me.

We had some older Camry Hybrids with push button start and the only way we could get it to work was to unhook the driver's door jamb switch. Basically the car didn't realize you had opened he door then so you could manually lock it on the way out and use the little in-fob key to get back in. The key fob electronics did not work when the cars were running. The only problem was those cars used the door opening signal to lock the steering after you parked and turned the car off so it never locked the steering unless you opened and closed another door.

Here's what I've found to work in my Subaru with push button start, and may be worth trying. Sitting in running vehicle, with doors closed. Lock all doors. Get out of truck via driver door (now that's the only one unlocked). Close door and lock with physical key.

That's what folks are referring to above when they say to use the key.

If one turn of the key doesn't lock all doors, two turns should do so.

Or you can use the lock button on the door panel and close the door.

Have you actually done this with your Tacoma and had it work?

I don't think on the auto someone could get the shifter into gear so even though the truck is running it can't be stolen, easily anyway.

What drives me nuts is the truck won't lock by touching the drivers door handle until all occupants close their doors.

If you getout of the truck while running and start walking away it beeps at you, about a minute later beeps again and turns off, just thought id mention that.
The only way to lock the door when u get out is with the physical key.

I think I tried this a while ago and it would go into gear just fine. Steering wheel lock disengages when the truck is started so that's already a non-issue.

I'll have to try it again.

Yeah, be nice if it didn't, but the behavior mirrors the remote lock function. Even my 2002 4Runner would refuse to lock from the remote until all doors were closed.

This sounds like I'm trying to be a smartass, but I'm not, just missing something. Why do you want to leave your truck running with locked doors?
    I'm guessing it's weather related?

Yes, the inside panel. step out the ride (after I turn off the motor) . push the lock icon button. close the door. all doors are locked.

If I'm running into the convenience store for a coke and my dogs are in the truck, I want to keep the AC running. I also don't want someone to be stupid and get themselves bit. So I lock the doors.

I apparently missed where you switched to discussing locking the truck after it was shut off, given that the thread title and the other posts reference locking while it's still running.
