My 2011 reg. cab 4x4 auto is experiencing the same issue. I hope I can take it in soon, but I work 8-5 every day and always miss their shop times :(

I think I know the noise you're talking about. I remember hearing it on my 2011 and 2013 when they had less than 5k on them. I wanna say it was the transmission...it went away. I can hear it on other new Tacomas off the lot, so I wasn't ever worried about it.

For your sanity OP, go to the dealer and ask to test drive another one of the trucks (similarly equipped) and see if you can duplicate the sound. (If your truck is still making the noise)

I have the same exact problem. Whine at 55-60 also noticeable at 20 mph all on De-cell. Has been back to the dealer several times. The carrier was changed, same issue. Rep. came out and directed dealer to put in special fluid which did not help. Toiyota is definitely aware and are working on a new special gear set, they are going to test it in my truck, new gear set was ordered....stay tuned!

Rode with the technician today -- they're going to order a new carrier assembly for me to try to fix the issue. Hopefully it works. I'll post back the results when it's installed.

I have a 12 DCLB same issue, rear end has been changed twice with no help. The dealer told me the last carrier was installed on a bulliten which just came out....now the noise is worse.

Just picked up the truck after having the rear diff replaced per the tsb. The noise is WAY worse, you can always hear it but really loud when decelerating from 30 and 60. I am starting to get really pissed with all of the problems I am having with the truck.

I bought my double cab 4x4 SR5 on 10-10-12. Have been having the same problem. A service bulletin was issued 4-26-13 (T-SB-0057-13) and prescribes a replacement differential. My dealer has replaced mine twice now. The new differentials did not fix the problem.

Ditto, actually the second differential made it worse. My dealership is waiting for toyota to put a remanufactured transmission so they can replace that.

Does anyone have a video or sound byte? I hear a noise from time to time, but I'm not sure it is what you guys are talking about.

Don't have audio but it's a high pitched whine/howl, to me it clearly sounds like something spinning. There is no question it is the rear differential because when driving it in 4x4 with the rear driveshaft removed the noise is gone. What is weird is the pitch does not seem to change with speed - mine makes the same noise at 35mph or 75 mph.

After messing around with my Tacoma for a full year and having 3 new differentials installed under warranty, I contacted Toyota corporate to complain. Their advice was to file an arbitration case. What a complete joke that was. Although Toyota issued a service bulletin in 2007 and another in 2013 for rear differential noise, the Toyota corporate rep testified that service bulletins are only intended to address problems and improve the condition, not necessarily fix them. The arbitration case was denied, citing this absurd statement by Toyota, and Toyota is refusing to honor the warranty and attempt any further repairs, even though they acknowledge there is an issue. One way to get rid of the noise would be to cover it up by installing more aggressive tires so that the gear noise cannot be heard over the tire noise.

Has anybody in this thread or anybody in general found a solution for this problem or what is causing it yet?

Does anyone with a manual transmission have this problem? I was noticing (in this thread) that most that have this issue are DCLB and one DCSB. All were automatics.

I think the only solution is to keep trying differentials until you get one that isn't making noise - they don't all do it. Unfortunately for me, after 3 diffs in my Tacoma, Toyota said that was as good as they could get it and they refused to try again. I put about 5,000 miles on the last one to see if it went away with some break-in time. It only got worse.
