I know I can remote start via the app and by pressing the lock button twice and holding until it starts up. But how do I leave the engine running while entering the vehicle?

When I use the app and unlock it stops the engine.
When using the fob I see the same behaviour. Is it always going to force me to restart the engine whenever I enter the vehicle? If so I think thats sort of idiotic - wondering if there are any workarounds or advice in general.

I want to heat up the car before entering - but I would like to avoid the on - off - on cycle if possible.

No way around it. It's going to shut off when you hit unlock on the fob or open a door. It's the stupidest safety feature I've ever encountered in nearly 30 years of driving.

:duh: I thought the left side steering volume being L-R and song skipping being U-D was retarded. But this takes the cake. Thanks for confirming I'm not an ape.

I'm glad this shut-off nonsense is a "feature". An idiotic one at that. I have only had my 2023 Taco for about a month or so and just tried the remote start last week, and found this. I was like WTF? Sigh....Guess in the grand scheme of things there could be worse issues. I still love the damn truck regardless. Will see if it holds up as good as my 2011.

Take it up with the people who think stop light/sign shutoff is saving money. If it saves gas at all it's not likely a meaningful amount and any such savings are chewed up by having to replace the battery sooner due to the wear and tear from the discharge/charge cycling or from having to buy a more powerful battery than the vehicle would need without such a "feature". Why do we seem to be heading towards a life like the wimps in the movie Demolition Man?

This can't be the stupidest thing Toyota did. The ability to start your car but NOT be able to exit the vehicle and lock the door (while it's running) is way stupider.

Living in north Georgia, I might use the remote start thing once or twice during our winter period. So no big deal if it shuts off when I open the door and I have to push the start button again.

But I can certainly see the annoyance for our brethren that lives north of the Mason-Dixon line. But I will give this one piece of advice: it is what it is so quit bitching about it!

After I saw the way it works, I no longer use it. We are living in a time of stupidity, and it annoying at best.

Yes, the old its’s a “feature” not “bug”. Interesting how every other manufacturer was able to solve the problem of unauthorized drive off.

I was going to install N2 since it’ll be nice to find a comfortable temperature when entering. The on off is reasonable. You unlock your truck or leave it unlocked. You remotely start it up. A walker says hey I like that truck. It’s on so I’ll take for a spin, open door it shuts off, if it doesn’t well it might be down the road.

But can it be driven for any distance withoit the key fob? If not, then why shut it off whem the door opens?

Actually, the way Toyota implements the remote start is stupid and unnecessary. There is no no way to defend how it operates. One example of how it could have been implemented is how my 2014 F350 remote start functions:

    1. Lock doors
    2. Remote start - engine runs
    3. Doors are locked (can't just "walk up" and steal the truck)
    4. Unlock doors (need key FOB) - again, can't just "walk up" and steal - engine continues to run
    5. Open door, get in - engine continues to run.
    6. Put key in ignition turn to RUN, engine stays running and you continue on your merry way. However, if you don't have the key for some reason (stealing the truck for instance - still have to manage getting entry into a LOCKED truck), because of the shift from park - brake pedal interlock (you can't steal / drive away without shifting from PARK), the engine dies when you press on the brake pedal without the handoff / key in ignition.

All this being said, Tacoma is still a great truck in so many other ways. Just this is one of those (few) things not great about the truck. I certainly would not pay extra for the remote start option in a Tacoma (Connected Services for example).

Thanks @Buck Henry for your comments.

    OP,

As others have said...no way around it unless you want to purchase an altering system to override it.

Personally, it works fine for me.

Example: Current temps have been almost freezing overnight.

When I park my truck for the evening, I set up the defrost/fan to speed 2 with the circulation closed and turn down the radio before shutting engine off.

The next morning, I will remote start (w/FOB) my Sport from the inside of my garage 30 minutes before I plan on leaving.

If there is frost on the windshield, it mostly melts so by the time I push-button start my truck, it was pre-warmed 10 mins.

Here is my truck as it sits in the driveway--photo taken from Bonus Room over the garage.

At least we don't have to deal with start-stop bs at every red light.
If I had to deal with that I'd make the six-o'clock news: Arizona Man Goes Ballistic at Red Light

I will try it, once it's out for a year, to let all kinks to be worked out.

My factory Chrysler T&C remote starter works same as you described. I have to push the "Start" button on the dash once I unlock the doors and get in. If I push brake pedal before pushing Start, the engine stops.
