I have heard you are not supposed to make turns on dry pavement when in 4 hi.

What about when it snows and the road conditions are changing from roads with a little snow on the ground to roads that have been fully plowed and you can see black top.

Is it safe to drive around and make turns in 4h? Should I change back and forth between 4high and 2wd depending on the surface conditions? Can constantly switching between 4high and 2wd cause any long term damage? Thanks in advance.

Yes, and your speed will have a lot to do with that.... Shifting properly shouldn't hurt anything.

Ah damn. I meant to write switching between 4h and 2wd... not 4h and 4low. I almost never put it in 4 low.

Same difference.... plus I assume just because the black is showing, the roads are wet ?

Most of my winters when it's snowing and icy are spent in 4hi. If it's icy, I'm not risking it. For example, sometimes there is a lot more ice on the right side of the road than in the middle, so 4hi it is. Good winter tires make a HUGE difference here. Don't be afraid to run studded snows for that added security if your state allows it. And yes, there are plenty of situations where 4hi can make it worse, but generally if it's snowy and icy, you should be okay. Take your time. Adjust speed accordingly.

:jerkoff: What is it with you people lately? Do you all share one giant bowl of piss n' cheerios in the mornings? Take that snarky shit back to facebook

Not sure how that was the interpretation.

Op: I have been driving in snow for 40 years. These trucks can handle the conditions you described of alternative black and snow conditions perfectly fine. Indeed the trade off for safety outweighs any minor friction in turning and the roadway/tire under these conditions will be wet for many revolutions regardless. It is true you don’t want to drive long ways or with oversteering on truly dry roads, but with time you will feel when the steering is “chipping” and will discontinue 4W. I’d not overthink it and just drive.

My comment stands, there’s only one way anybody is going to take your comment and that’s badly. Just saying.

My apologies. Perhaps I should be less brief. Op if I have offended you I apologize and I appreciate the TW community’s teaming up in support.

One of the best things you can do for traction in snow is put weight on the rear axle.

a couple 50 lb bags of gravel or sand in the bed right over the axle can help.

as a bonus If you get real stuck you can use it to create traction.

OP, read up on how 4wd works vs AWD and then make your decision based on knowledge, not X conditions, since conditions are all different. Very quickly, when you corner all 4 wheels need to rotate at different speeds, 4hi or 4low will (in theory) lock all 4 wheels to move at the same rate, so you are forcing something to slip/give when using 4wd and turning. On anything other than dry pavement it’s the tire on the ground, on dry pavement due to traction it’s putting a lot of force on the axles and drivetrain, that’s why it’s not good to use 4wd on dry pavement. I said in theory above, and then locked axles also come into play. Since you’re not locking each diff not all 4 wheels are actually forced to turn at the same rate, but rather one front and one rear. So a little more complicated than my quick description.
