changed my oil at every 5000 miles, no synthetic used, no problems with the engine till i traded her at 150000 for my new ram 1500. my son went down and bought my toy from the dealer and shes still going strong.

Keep an eye out for the Mobile One rebate.
    If consistent with previous years:
    • a 5 qt Mobile One synthetic of your preferred flavor should be $12 after rebate (Wally World);
    • you can get up to 4 of them
    • buy a case of Yota filters (from and online legit dealer) 10 for $40 or better
    • Either assume you’ll get 10K on an oil change or send a sample to Blackstone to find out your optimal change interval.
Drain bolt gasket - replace, anneal, do nothing- your choice. Just make sure there’s only one installed.

Oil changes will be about $20 per..

If you're gonna change every 5K use the cheapest oil that is the correct weight. The advantage of synthetic is longer oil change intervals. I use Mobile 1 every 10K and have for 13 years and 203,000 miles on the Tacoma. Over 400,000 combined miles with everything on the driveway using that interval. The oil is around $25 for 5 quarts at Walmart and I change my own.

I bought a 2 pack of Costco’s Kirkland 5 quart 5w30 synthetic oil for $25, pretty good deal. I use Mobil 1’s extended performance oil filters, overkill as they’re rated at up to 20,000, but I’m OCD.

Been waiting to pick some up but can’t seem to find it yet in 0w-20, and im not going into Costco at the moment haha. Should be a similar or same blend as Supertech and Amazon basics.

Yup I think it’s the same maker as super tech and Amazon, I forget the name of the company. I grabbed two boxes of double 5 quart boxes from Costco and yes Costco’s a mad house these days, they had a sign up saying that customers could only buy 2 cases of water, people be crazy!

Warren distribution. They do plenty of quality blends and I’ve entrusted their products for years, never with any issues.
Sadly yes it has. Hopefully folks can get a grip soon. The 10 qts would be perfect since both my vehicles take 0w-20. The truck taking 6.1 qts, and the car 3.9 qts. It’s like it was meant to be!

Use whatever you want in the proper viscosity. I always use the cheapest I can find.

It takes a serious lack of skill to mess up an oil change. Yet quickie lube manage to do so. A friend worked at a dealership, said they got a minimum of 3 per month, destroyed engine warranty due to them leaving the drain plug or filter loose, forgot to put oil in. They're constantly proven corrupt by hidden camera crews. Squirt fluid on it to say it's leaking, cleaning the part to say they changed it. Putting used oil in is a new one to me.

Sure it takes about 1.5 hours to pull out the jack, stands, and stuff, shower after. But then you'll know it was done right.

Someone did a really good write up and several videos on oil filters. I went with the Napa gold for my second oil change since I got it last year. Double flushed, drained & refilled oil, drove for a week, then a regular oil change. Now it's got very clean oil.

And this is the reason why I do my own maintenance on both my vehicles and house. Yeah you may save a couple of bucks, but’s it’s really about piece of mind and knowing that the job was done right. I flushed my tranny today on my used Tacoma and exchanged the same amount of fluid (2 quarts out/2 quarts in) and when I pulled the check plug it was low on fluid. I can’t be sure if that’s from the factory or the tranny was serviced along the line, but they didn't add the correct amount.

I go with Mobil 1 Extended that should last 15,000 miles. I change every 10,000. My reports from Blackstone labs come back great.

That's what I thought too - and it seems a consensus as I ask/look around!! I have a similar situation...my son just bought a 2002 Xtra cab (V6) 4x4 Off Road with 235K miles...he bought it from a close friend of mine - who bought the truck new. My friend just put in a new timing belt, water pump, clutch and a few other things - along with a set of new Goodyear Duratracs. The truck has a Warn winch with a nice heavy duty bumper and is clean as a whistle with no rust. I was a little hesitant about him buying a vehicle with that many miles, but he sold it to him for $3500 and so I though that was a good deal. All that to say this to say, I'd like the truck to last as long as possible for my son (he will leave for college next year)...my friend changed his oil every 2500 miles, but did not use synthetic...my son said he will continue my friends routine...I told him synthetic was a waste of money for such frequent changes. However I do not really have any expertise to make that claim (HA!).

But quality anecdotal evidence/information like that is what the Interwebs are famous for.

As long as we are giving anecdotal information... I had a supervisor that grew up in France. I had some bad acne at the time. He told me that his grandfather showed him a trick that worked for him when he was a kid - Pee on your hands and pat it on your face and the acne won't be as bad.

Yeah I heard that trick back in the 60s (when I grew up)...I never had acne but found someone that did....

I just picked up a 2015 with 16k on it , I registered it on Toyota owners site . It had more details than the car fax , said it had a oil change with Synthetic oil at 9k and replaced tires due to tire rot at the Toyota dealer .
I’m going to stay on the Synthetic regimen , its only a little 4cyl but I don’t mind .
