The question remains, who the hell is buying these 1-3 year old used tacoma's over new ones?

August 2012 I traded a 2007 Double Cab 4x4 TRD Sport on a 2012 Base Double Cab V6 4x4. They gave me Edmunds excellent retail for my trade and I paid around $25,500 for the brand new truck. They even went and got it from another dealer 127 miles way.

I put fog lights in the bumper and put my 32" BFG ATs (from my '07 that I traded) on the stock suspension with $500 Level 8 wheels. Oh, and I got the windows tinted by a friend who is a 3M installer which cost me $150.

Drove it and made payments for 2 years and 18,000 miles, and sold it outright to a non Toyota dealership for $26,633, cash, in July 2014. Paid off my loan and used the difference of almost $7500 to help with a downpayment on my new house. I miss the truck, but I like the house :D

Same as the rest of you; searched for a 1-2 yr old tacoma with 30k miles or less. Ended up buying a new 2015 for the relatively small price difference.
Sold my 2004 TRD Off Road with 310k miles for $7500

strange, all the dealers around here know what they are and covet them. They also know to price them high.

I LOVE this part. I fully believe it too. Just had a dealer give a friend of mine $6,000 for his '03 DC TRD OR 4x4 on a trade against invoice on a new 4Runner. He had 292,000 on his and the original frame. Crazy!

Haven't read through the thread but I'm sure it's been pointed out that OP's assumption about Tacos taking some kind of price hit off the lot is wishful thinking.

Is there some kind of statistic that tracks vehicles' resale values? Tacomas have to be in the top 2.

Actually, I think it was number two to the FJ. I think that was at something like 67%.

Edit: Since the FJ is gone, the Taco takes the crown.

Same thing happened to me with the Tundra I just got rid of. I drove it for one year, put 15k miles on it, and got more in trade value than I paid new. I got right at 1k more than what I paid.

So you bought a brand new Tundra, drove it for one year, put 15k miles on it, and then traded it back into a dealer who gave you 1k more than you paid?

Hard to believe! Makes me think they stole a trade in from you to give you a lower price on the original purchase of the Tundra than they normally would have or something.

Sorry, but a double cab V6 4x4 SR5 trucks do not go for $34,800. You didn't save anywhere near the 7k that you thought you did.

I managed to buy my 13' V6 TRD OR 4x4 for exactly 31k before TTL paying cash without a trade in. That price included at least $500 in accessories as well. The window sticker MSRP on my TRD OR was only 33k, where did you get that 34.8k number for an SR5 from?

I bought my Tundra from the largest high volume dealer in the world. They had a blowout price on them. I traded it into a different dealer. My 2014 Tundra was $23,777. They gave me a $24,850 on trade in. And, I kept my previous truck - no trade in and sold the previous truck to my neighbor.

I don't understand; How did they give you 24,850 on trade in, but you sold it to your neighbor? Are you saying the dealer offered 24,850, but you didn't accept that and sold it to your neighbor for the same price or more?

If they were offering 24,850 trade in, then what kind of deal where you getting on the new vehicle and what specs and financing on that vehicle. Many times a dealer will over value your trade in to make you feel good, if they can make up for it on the new sale through purchase price or financing.

No, the truck that I owned when I purchased my Tundra...I sold that vehicle to my neighbor, and used the cash from that transaction as an down payment for the Tundra.

I was in the used car market for three months before I gave up. The mid to late 2000's were the final breath of the used car market. Now everyone and their mother posts their used car on craigslist asking KBB price and won't budge. Blue book value is dog crap but people think it's the Lord's word. Hondas and Toyotas have probably THE most ludicrous asking prices, especially 4x4's. People have 90's models asking five digits.

Your best bet is check the local paper or drive through old people neighborhoods because they're the only ones who do it the old fashioned way still and they usually give cars away as a steal.

I just sucked it up and bought a new truck and have no regrets. These days that's what you have to do.
