I've never seen a resume with a GPA on it. It may say Deans List, Cum Laude or something along those lines by rarely is it ever.

former engineering college student here- I'll be the first to say it, GPA doesn't matter nearly as much as your personality/interaction/chemistry with other people in the real work and your ability to get things done. GPA looks great on paper, but real world performance is what matters. Internships are key, do not forget that, get as much real world experience as you can before you graduate, you'll have a big leg up on everyone else.

And you were told wrong. It does matter, depending what job you are applying, and the school attended. 3.0 is good, 3.3 and above gets the keys to the kingdome! I had a 2.95 on my second B.A. (should've been a Masters) but since I was looking for work with that degree (Acct) instead of Hospitality Management (my first) that's the one they cared about. It didn't matter that I had a 3.25 on my first B.A. Got a LOT of doors closed because of that. Some Acct firms will not even interview applicants with less than a 3.5 !

I went to USF as a freshman, part of my sophmore and grad school. Men are so rare in the college of nursing that they are considered "minority applicants", or at least it was while I was there. I thought about attending for one semester while at USF or UCF. Great way to have an INCREDIBLE dating life :D! Specially when you considered the high amount of gay dudes attending, I mean it must be like being in heaven, 12-15 chicks per guy!!!

 I interview people fresh out of school all the time and they almost always put their GPA on their resume. Big red flag if they don't, in fact.

Fair enough, I was always told not to put it on there. Really a lot of it probably depends on the job too.

Hmmm...if people these days are being told specifically not to put it on there, maybe I should stop throwing away the resumes that don't have it

Honestly, I see both sides of why it's needed and not needed.
I would throw away any resume that look like a ten year old did them to be honest. Its pathetic how awful some people present themselves on a piece of paper.

General rule of thumb is put it on if its 3.0 or greater, and not if its below.

if your fresh out of school you need to put your gpa, if you don't put your gps it is a red flag that your gpa is not good. The only thing the person hiring you has to go on is your past expereince/work experience (which is lacking because your fresh out of school, hopefully you've got some good internships) and your gpa to show how well you preform in school. A bad ad gpa is quickly overlooked if you know what your talking about, have great experience (by that i mean you've proven you can make stuff happen, and get things done) and have a good personality. Your confidence and carisma will go the furthest in an interview process as long as you can back it up. nobody is going to hire a kid whos got a 4.0 in mechanical engineering but can't tell them how an engine works, they would much rather hire the kid with a 2.5 who's built something impressive because they know how things work

after the first job / year or two, no one cares about your gpa anymore

well, in your line of work I wouldn't want an average geologist trying to find oil, I'd want the cream of the crop trying to create another chevron disaster..haha

So true, I feel like GPA on your resume is a 50/50 shot. Frankly my buddy got a job with a major company doing environmental disaster site cleanup and he sure as shit didn't put his G.P.A. he'd be lucky to have a 2.5 it's all about who you know sometimes though.

Depends on your major and your desired employer, the DoD wants 2.5 or better for engineering jobs, but if you have over a 3.0 then you get paid more. Also if you have a job in college that can excuse a slightly lower GPA, I graduated as an engineer with a 3.5 and worked 20-30 hrs each week each year and when recruiters were looking for better GPAs than what I had they excused my lower GPA because I had a job and work ethic is more important than grades. But I had a roommate that thought otherwise, he had a 4.0 for the first year, never got a job, and dropped out because he couldn't handle it, always gave me crap because I got a 3.1 my first year and said I would never get a job, now I am 3 years out of college making $82k+ and he is working at a fast food joint... :)

See another thing I have going for me, the university here in houston i attend is Texas Womens University. I think that'd make me even more of a minority :D.
Besides that, I've heard it's a really good nursing school and my mom has co-workers who are fresh graduates from there at her hospital getting jobs there almost instantly.

And the experience stuff, yeah I've always been told that experience is an important thing. I agree too, sometimes I feel as if having work experience can be better than just being only book smart. Having both is just wonderful. I have volunteered in a pediatrics clinic shadowing the nurses and doctor there during my senior year of high school. I might go back to them and see if they'll let me volunteer again. They did tell me that I was one of the only few kids that came through the program i was in who actually wanted to get work done there, most just came so they can say they volunteered and use it on their resumes.

Oh and I know I'm still young and all, but I still find it amazing to see how quickly time flys.

High school whizzed by, I wonder how the rest of college is going to be like...
