I just switched over to 285/70/17 and it obviously has thrown off my speedo. I usually track my mileage using fuelly so how do you all do the calculations now? Or do you just say eff it

There is a calculator in the wheels and tires section of the forums.

My speedo was 10%. Got the hypertech calibration unit and all is perfect now.

You can use the calculator to see the difference in size percentage wise. For example, my tires are 4% larger than stock, so when calculating MPG, I multiply my miles traveled by 1.04 to get the true miles traveled.

This is what I was looking for thank you based on the calculator I'm 6.9% bigger than stock so when I fill up I'll likely my mileage traveled by 1.069.

I've always used my gps. Even the stock speed is usually off on most cars.

Yeah I noticed that, I just like to teach my mileage with the fuelly app and then I put on these tires it was really triggering my OCD about tracking mileage so this will help until I get the hypertech calibrator

I have a Garmin and it will show the same speed as a calibrated speedometer all the time. The Garmin has rode all over the country on cars and trucks and motorcycles. My klr Speedo is off by almost 10 percent.

    Your Garmin records miles traveled?

Yes. It has trip odometers, fastest speed traveled and a few other things. It's a few years old, I'd think newer ones would have that too.

iPhone app. GPS measures your speed. Mine's about 1 mph off at 70 with 265/70/17's.

Best way to determine mph difference is by using the rev's per mile of the tire. Take the difference and divide by starting point. If you take 63,360 (inches/mile) and divide it by revs/mile and take result and divide it by 3.14159 (PI), you will get the actual tire height which is different than the "published" height. Quoted you because I am looking at replacing stock 265/65/17's with 265/70/17's but don't want any rubbing issues. Wondering if you have these tires on stock rims w/o lift or spacers. Thanks, Ron

. . . or you can use the app and not deal with all that.

Does that Hypertech unit have some sort of instructions for measuring your tire size and inputting that to the programmer. I'm new to the Tacoma, but that's how my Jeep was. I have 285/70r17's on my truck, and my speedometer is 3-4mph slower than what my GPS app is saying.

Yes. It's very straightforward. Then follow it up with the tune and no need for regear. Truck would only go into 6th with the wind pushing me down hill at 70+.

Ooooh that's a good point. I wasn't going to bother with a speedo calibration since that unit is so expensive.

But after your post and putting it together with the shift sense thread some of the shifting is based on speed not just rpm.

Are you guys that recalibrate actually seeing better driving manners? Not just a correct speedo and odometer.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but having an incorrect speedometer also means your odometer will be off, right?
