No, the 8.4 is the stronger of the two, maybe even as strong as a ford 9". The 8" e-locker is pretty tough though, just not as tough as the 8.4. I average about 40,000 miles on each 8" third (I've been through a few), running 37's and abusing the hell out of it. Like donuts on dry pavement with the locker on type of abuse. Just cruising up the holler slingin' mud that 8.4" will last you a very long time. (I used to live in chuck town).
