Just bought a 2023 taco SR5 6 cyl. I plan on changing my oil every 5,000 miles and not the 10,000 miles as per Toyota. I know when you get your oil changed at the dealership, it’s not the best grade of oil. What brand/type of oil should I purchase and provide to the dealership when I get my oil changed out?

Not sure where you get your information but the quality of dealership oil is fine. Your best bet is to do the job yourself but if that’s not possible what brand they use should be the least of your concerns.

Dealer oil is fine. You can go exotic once you quit using them.

Exactly, dealer that did toyota care here always used mobil 0w20 extended service. I've continue to use it, and change it at every 10k miles or so. I ran that stuff in my tundra for nearly 300k miles changing it every 15k miles. Imo, unless you're a severe use owner, 5k mile oil changes are too early.

Don't overthink this. I've seen enough to convince me synthetic is better, especially if you go over 5K on oil changes. Other than that pick the right weigth oil. Brand doesn't really matter.

And 10,000 mile oil changes are fine. I've done that since new and I'm closing in on 240,000 miles. Never added a drop of oil between changes. There are guys out there with million mile Tacoma's that changed oil every 10,000 miles.

Time is as important as miles. The only way I'd change sooner than 10,000 miles is if you don't drive a lot. I like to change oil every 6 months or 10,000. Whichever comes 1st.
