I've seen Youtube videos doing both and it seems that dipping them without removing them may be best for ensuring they stay properly aligned. Seems the extra work of taping around it would be negated by not having to remove the badges, possibly having to add double sided tape back to the badges to reattach etc.

Any thoughts on the pros/cons of each method and which one I should go with? It's my first time attempting to plastidip.

I'd keep them on the car and tape around just to keep it neat. Then it's done, simply pull off the excess and use a toothpick to get into the nooks and crannies.

I watched several youtube Videos and this seemed to be the way most people did it when they were kept on the vehicle, so its likely what I'll be doing. I've read anywhere from 3 to 5 light coats were recommended. Does that sound about right?

I plastiderped all badges, wheels, back bumper, and (dont kill me anyone) bull guard in front (as anyone could guess). I don't think I did enough coats on the bull guard, it looks bad now. BUT I dipped everything else almost 4 years ago and they're just now chipping away.

But yes, I'd say keep the badges on, tape them off. Much easier operation. Before I dipped them, I tried painting them gloss black. Frustrating as hell getting those things off with fishing wire, in the cold, with a hair dryer to heat them up. Don't recommend it.

Yeah, I"m likely going to remove the "V6" one from my back tailgate. Not sure why a truck manufacturer thought it was a good idea to boast about having a V6, but I already have the black tailgate vinyl letter inserts on the tailgate and feel thats enough black back there and that the V6 would make it like asymmetrical.

I agree. Just make sure to get nice even coats, and a good number of them. Also don't wait too long between drying stages, this stuff drys up extremely fast and can leave a blotchy finish is you try to cover them up like that.

Probably to get a leg on the 4 cyl owners. But I agree, kinda lame. My old c55 amg had a 5.4 v8 shoved into a small c-class sedan and it didn't have any v8 badging.

    Thank you for the advice.

How long do you generally wait between stages? I saw someone on line state he waited 45 minutes to an hour and another video said to wait no more than 10 minutes. The humidity here in South Alabama is similar to your humidity in Louisiana so should roughly be around the same times I think.

That stuff would be dry after 45 minutes. It was a while back, but I remember it wasn't long at all. What I did was - tape off all the badges at once, then I'd spray one down (somewhat lightly, don't want it to be drenched/ already covered completely), then move on to the next one. After that I was done with that one, I'd wait like 4 minutes (I remember I could even see it start to dry before my eyes), move back to the one before, going back and forth between those first 2. I think it was 3-4 maybe 5 coats. I'd say wait even shorter than 10 minutes.

Also, clean everything before hand. I think it even says on the can how long to wait between coats. If you wait til it drys up between coats, that'll probably ensure flaking.

Tape an area off around the badge. Use newspaper to keep the over spray off. Little dots are a pain to remove.

Say you did the v6 badge, do a 4x4 square around it. Do several coats and then just remove the square of plastidip and it will peel the dip all around the letters.

Time in between Coats really only depends on outside temp, 70ish, 15/20 minutes is fines. The more coats the better. SIX MINIMUM IMO. The more coats the easier it will come off if you ever choose to do so. Plus thicker will protect it better.

Most important tip of all: AS SOON AS YOU FINISH ONE COAT, TURN CAN UPSIDE DOWN AND SPRAY UNTIL CLEAR/AIR ONLY

That will insure the line doesn't clog in between coats. 30 minutes or more after just one coat and if you didn't clear the can it could clog/no longer work.

Plasti-Dip works great and is ver very easy to use! You'll do a great job your first time out!!!

I used the other brand- Rustoleum??? on my grill logo. I did 6 total coats, I sprayed lightly each coat and waited 5 mins between using a timer. Light coats x5 then one medium coat at the end. Came out great.

On your light coats, you may miss a little- that's ok- don't try to cover that 30 seconds later- just get it on the next coat.

Ultimately, the Rustoleum red ended up drying a little light for my taste so I grabbed fire engine red spraypaint and painted right over it. That came out great too.

Most larger domestic trucks are V6s. Very few V8 are being manufactured due to CAFE standards. Today's V6 have way more horse power than older V8.
