I really want to get new tires and wheels for my '20 TRD Sport but I'm totally green when it comes to understanding this stuff.
I really want the Toyo A/T 3 tires with the Summit Offroad Dakar 17" wheels. I understand the basics like my rim size being 17, "P265/65R17" (what my tire says).

Can anyone break this down for me a little further so I can verify these will fit and how to comprehend all the specs?

    The A/T 3 has a "P" before the "265/65R17" and the A/T2 doesn't, what does that "P" stand for?
The Dakar wheel says 9", but the tire says a range of 7.5-8.0-9.5, does that technically mean it will fit?

The AT3 is a good tire.
the P stands for passenger/metric tire rating, it’s like 4 ply for strength rating. If you Offroad you will be wanting 6 or 10 ply.
If the tire is rated to a 9.5 inch wide wheel then you will be ok with it.
265 is the tread width and 65 is the percentage for the height of the sidewall compared to the width. It’s 65 percent of 265mm.

    Good luck buying tires!

Down the rabbit hole....after you figure that all out, then start researching wheel offset

Thank you!! You totally broke it all down for me.
The new A/T 3 doesn't have a "P", so I'm assuming it will be better than the older version. I don't do a lot of offroading-mainly fireroads, minimal desert and a few mountain trails but nothing like Moab.

    Dave,
If I went to a 70 sidewall instead of my stock 65 sidewall, would there be much of a difference?
I noticed the A/T 3 comes in 265/70/R17 and 265/65/R17 (this is also my current stock tire)

So you can play with this calculator to see what the differences are, roughly. Different brands and models have specific size differences - best place to get htat is from the manufacturer themselves.

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc

That said 70 to 75 isn't a huge difference. I'd search around this site and see if you can find pics of the combo you're looking at.

Also, backspacing is a pain in the rear, here's a tool I was playing with the other day that might clarify it:

Whoa. I'll play around with that visualizer. Much appreciated.

Going up from the stock size to 265/70/r17 will be completely fine, most people go up to that size when they get new tires and thats the size I'm running now (except I have 16" rims, but same diameter) and the only thing I had to do was get some lower profile mud flaps. If you have the stock mudflaps, there's a chance those slightly larger tires will contact them when you turn the wheel all the way.

Backspacing will also effect this, but a lot of people go to rims with 0 mm offset, 4.5" backspacing without issues. That also happens to be the specs on the wheels I have on my truck, again no issues and it pokes the wheels out of the fenders about an extra inch per side which keeps them beneath the fender flares but does look a little better in my opinion.
