I read that some Toyota service managers believe that Tacomas built between those years are negatively effected by being built during Covid and therefore are less reliable. What is your experience? I really want the new 24 but am considering something during that time frame for the time being while I wait and they probably work out some of the first production bugs. Any experience with that time frame would be appreciated. Thx

I believe you will receive mostly anecdotal evidence stating “my neighbor has a 2021 and my 2022 both run fine, therefore there are no issues”.
I’m sure there are websites out there that track issues YOY.

I don’t know. I think if Covid effected anything, it effected all car manufacturers equally, not just Toyota.

Also, most modern auto manufacturers are highly automated. The robots don’t care about Covid.

I think supply chain issues have had impacts, but again, those are fairly universal and not particular to any manufacturer.

My 2021 has been trouble free for 20,000 miles. My previous 2010 (in contrast) had numerous recalls and issues with the stock stereo and flaking wheel paint.

I would agree with your idea to avoid the first model year of this next generation Tacoma. While I’m sure it will prove reliable, almost every new model year vehicle has initial release issues which need to be addressed.

Welcome to TW :) Are these the same Toyota Service Managers that tell you everything is "normal" when you bring the truck in for a warranty concern?

Regarding my question, I have not heard of an inordinate amount of problems / warranty work being performed on these model years, but thought it would be interesting to get the perspective from those who own them.

We had way more issues with 16-17 models, 20-23 has been pretty consistent with shared typical problems across the entire generation.

Still a Toyota and still very unlikely to have a problem at all.

Plus power seat and proper media unit make the 20+ way better to own.

I've owned a 2021 and now a 2022. The fenders seem more flimsy on the 2022 for some reason? The plastic tailgate trim is bubbling up and window trim on the rear doors is shrinking on the '22 so that's gonna be an interesting dealer trip...

I've never heard of a truck catching covid. How do you test for that?

My 2020 DCSB SR5 2WD was dead nuts reliable…but I still traded it in for a 2023 DCSB OR 4X4. I was happy before but now I’m truly happy ;)

You’re probably aware that used Tacoma prices went through the roof during this time. It paid for most of my new truck as the Toyota dealer matched the offers I got from Carvana/Carmax. The 2020-2023 models are foolproof. That said, these are not only Toyotas, they’re Tacomas so the 2024 initial run might…might…have an issue or two but you will through them.

As an aside, I bought a 2015 Mustang GT manual when they came out…also dead nuts reliable. It was the initial run of that platform. The GT had 90k miles on the clock and not one problem during that time. Traded it in for my 2020 Tacoma. If you really want the 2024, just get it!

FWIW, I have a 2021 TRD Sport and not a moment's problem. Just regular maintenance and the inordinate amount of money this place has made me spend on mods :p
