Hey all, I am rocking stock steel rims and see some alloy takeoffs for sale in my area. I have a few questions though and I was hoping for some help.

First, they don't come with TPMS sensors. Will the tire shop be able to take mine out of the current rims and put them into the aluminum ones?

Are there any major disadvantages to switching? I am thinking there is probably some weight savings which could be beneficial since I have the 2.7.

I believe my current tires should fit, since they are both 16x7 I think, but if anyone knows of a problem here, please tell me. Thank you for any help.

A pic of the takeoffs, came off a 2010 so they have been around.

The TPMS sensor are different in you steel wheels and will not work in the aluminum rims. There isn't any disadvantages to using the aluminum rims unless you live in a cold climate. Salt oxidizes aluminum and it's harder to keep them air tight in extreme cold.

Ah bummer, that is a deal breaker there. I don't think I want the aluminum bad enough to buy new sensors for them. Thank you.

The steel TPMS sensors use a different angle in the sensor so it's impossible to install them in the aluminum without breaking them. Maybe you can find some on Ebay and work the guy for a better deal?

I was just looking $40 bucks a piece for them isn't terrible. The guy already wants $400 for them, too much IMO, I was thinking about offering $200 for the set and see what he says. I suppose I can offset the cost by selling my steel takeoffs with the TPMS in them too.

Those are 16" and Toyota has been using them for many years. If he does move on the price I'd pass. I've seen TRD 17" with tires and TPMS for $600.

Good to know thank you. I think I'll wait for a set of gen 3 take offs with tires and tpms to come along for around that price. Too much involved in this set I think.

You have a 2.7L and Steelies... does that mean you also have a 5-lug? Those Take offs are 6 lugs.

Oh yeah. Missed the 4x4 part.

Where in MT are you? I'm in Bozeman. Would love to sell those exact same wheels. :) Plastidipped my takeoffs about 2 months after I got the truck. Replaced them at about 9k miles on them in total. Should be nearly perfect condition. Sitting in boxes in my garage right now.

I am in Missoula. You are selling the same take offs shown in the first post? What color are they? PM me about it. I am generally not a huge fan of plastidipped wheels but am interested in seeing them for sure.

Another thing to think about is when you switch to different tpms sensors your ecu won't read the new sensors in the tires. You need to program the new tpms numbers to the ecu, you can pay someone to do it or buy the tool that plugs into your obd2 port. Also I just bought the same rims you are looking at to replace your steelies, I only paid $140 for all four rims without tpms. I then got on ebay and got 4 tpms sensors for $50 shipped. Also when you switch from steelies to those aluminum rims you will need different lug nuts. For the new lug nuts I got on ebay again and got all 24 for $30 shipped. Hope that helps.

I bought the rims locally from someone off this forum, so shipping was nothing.

That is exactly what I needed, thank you. I've been kicking around the idea of buying a code reader tool, this might be what pushes me to do it. I assume that you switched from steel rims. Did you just transfer the same tires to the new rims?

I did not just switch tires, but I could have. Both the steelies and the aluminum rims are the same size 16x7. So what fits on one will fit on the other. You will need a special obd2 tool, not just your normal code reader. I believe you will need one that has tis, which is toyota's code reading program. You can buy the knock off tis program for like $30 and run the program on a laptop. There are threads on here showing you step by step how to program new tpms numbers into the ecu using the cheap tis software. Just search tpms and tis. You could also just buy a tool that just changes the tpms numbers, like a ateq quickset tpms reset tool. These tools cost around $150, but make the job a lot easier. Your last opton is to take it somewhere and pay someone to change the tpms numbers. I almost forgot, if you decide to change the numbers yourself don't forget to write the new tpms numbers before you put them in the tires. Without those new numbers written down you won't be able to program them into the ecu. I hope that all make sense.

Yup makes sense. I think in that case I will pay to have it done. Thank you.

You can use the TPMS sensors from your steelies on a new set of aluminum wheels. You just have to install them backwards. It works, had this done on my '11 since I purchased it new. Word of caution, because of the odd angle they will now sit, they will likely break if you ever get a flat tire...
