    Those "holes" look like they were used for rivets for reinforcement. I'd definetly use them.

    It looks like he had no bed just a cage. Usually there are mounts near the tail light.

    Those bedsides looks like they were secured to a bed cage that's why you have those holes. If you look carefully, the bedsides should have little dimples on them where you will have to drill at to bolt on your stock bed.
