We have a 99 extra cab that my son drives and I have an 11 DC short bed. Double cab is pretty good size. My son is 6'2" and he survived a 3k roadtrip in the back without much trouble. Short bed is fine for small loads and short hauls but we use the 99 for dump runs cause it does hold a good bit more. I think the utility of the DC far out weighs the shorter bed.

I had a 2000 ext cab 2wd Tacoma. Loved the truck, but needed more backseat space so my daughter could ride in her carseat back there. Replaced it with a 2008 DCSB, TRD OR. I love the cab and it works well for my suburban lifestyle. Trips to ths dump, mulch, plants, etc... The biggest loads that I have hauled were lubmber. I needed to haul some 16 ft deck boards, so I bought a hitch mounted bed extender. Probably would have needed that even with the long bed.

Can't comment about off-road capabilities. I realize that much of this truck is a waste for me, but I got a really good deal on it.

For me, I needed the interior space, and occasionally a truck bed. The few grown ups that have ridden in the back seat were comfortable, but we were only going across town.

I have a 2 year old and a 6 month old, 2 carseats in the back fit but def not a lot of room. I almost bought a Tundra, but like you, figured it was too much truck and it would have been. The extra space inside would have been good to have but not needed.

I have a 6 footbed and am really glad I have it. I have so many stories and scenarios why I love my 6 ft bed but I'll just tell you that today, once again, I needed the 6 ft length when I did a job to move a headboard for a bed. It was for a queen and it fit perfectly, if I had a shorter bed it wouldnt have fit, and I would have had to use my trailer. That costs more in gas and just more of a hassle.

I have said it before and I'll repeat myself once again. I have never once said to myself that I wish I had a shorter bed. I have however, on a few occasions wanted a longer bed. If you are buying a pick up truck to haul things get the bigger bed, if you don't haul things get a suv IMO.

A little of this and a little of that.
I've had my DCSB for a little over a year. I honestly thought the SB would become an issue, but so far I haven't needed or wanted the longer bed. The interior room is adequate for a mid sized truck. The only people that sit back there are my two kids, and they'd rather ride in my truck than my wifes 4Runner. :D

The DCLB trucks look "balanced" when they're lifted, IMO.

ive had 3 grown men and 3 rifles squeezed in the back seat of mine. they never complained.
there is a sacrifice for your bed space though. i have a roll up toneau cover on mine but really wished i had a tool box, but that would take up too much space. just weigh what you would do with the shord bed vs. the long bed.

I had a DC SB & felt the truck was good with the space.
Owned a trailer like yours if I needed do haul anything extra.
That truck worked great for my little landscape business & outdoor activities w/ or w/o kids & dogs. I packed that truck up!
I did trade it for a 11 Tundra for we upgraded to a larger enclosed trailer in Sep.

    Have a 2012 DCSB T/X Pro.

I'd say it depends on what and how big the people and cargo are.... Mine is great for me. I can haul my 450r but can't close the tail gate. I can haul 4x8 sheets of ply wood but it does not lay flat. I can haul my 2 large dogs in the back seat 500+ miles fine one being 125 pounds & the other 65 pounds. As far as people, I've never had more then 1 in the back seat for any long distance. That 1 is about 6'-2" & 165 pounds and more then once we've driven 250+ miles. I've hauled 2 full size adults in the back but for only about 15 miles each way. In any of these cases I've not had one complaint.

How do you like the Tundra compared to the Tacoma? I would love to have the extra room in the Tundra "just in case".

I have the 4wd dc off road package, bed is too short to put my snowboards in straight so I built a rack, you probably could get a motorcycle in the bed with the back wheel on the tailgate maybe. If you want to fck in the back do yourself a favor and slide the front seats up you will have more room lol

If you are in northern Virginia and looking, check out Koons Toyota in Tysons Corner, ask for Don Evans, tell him Duane sent you, he gave me a great deal on my 2012 in November

Two week long road trip to Alaska, 8000km, 5 adults not comfortable, but got done. Also helped that it was a camping/hiking trip so no great comfort was expected in the first place.

A year after a three week long road trip across western US, 10000km, 4 adults. This time 0 issues, everyone was comfortable, worked out great.

5ft bed is short, you will definately have to plan how to load stuff in it. Sometime tailgate has to stay down, so a bed extender is on my list next.

I prefer 6ft as its more useful, but since DC 6MT and 6ft bed does not exist I learned to live with 5ft bed...
