Hey guys, I'm sure this has been covered somewhere (I'll do my research when my wife isn't monopolizing the computer), but I'm looking into piecing together a do-it-yourself quick connect/disconnect at the rear. My loser stepdad thought he invented this concept back in the 90s. It was a novel idea and quite functional, but he's not as original as he thinks. That said, I'm trying to duplicate it but I wanna do it right. Having tapped the unlimited resources in this forum before, I know someone here has done it and has some good info.

Just to be clear, I want to run battery cable from the under the hood battery to the rear of the truck, tail-gate area, using a quick disconnect. My plan is to also fabricate a set of jumper cables with your basic alligator clamps on one end and the opposite quick connect on the other. Also so that later on after installing a winch, I can use this as my power supply. My question is, can I connect directly to the battery posts for my power? Also, what gauge wiring is recommended (I'm thinking AWG 2)?

Another question to go along the same lines:
When adding auxiliary lights, a winch, possibly an on board compressor later on, (aside from upgrading the battery) what modifications should be made for the sake of safety and integrity to the starter and/or alternator?

Any input, tips or thoughts are greatly appreciated!

That's too much length for jumper cables unless you are using some positively HUGE cables. The resistance under load from starting will overheat the cables and severely limit the available current.

Moose, as far as the power you ran for the winch, that's exactly what I had in mind. I checked out the Warn package. You're right, a little pricey. But maybe worth it for peace of mind and saving time. Another thing I need to consider is having a hitch installed and running wiring for that. Not to mention finding a good location next to the hitch without interfering. I dig the switch/solenoid off the battery too. That will need to be part of the plan.

    Thanks man.
