I think I remember hearing or reading something along the lines of... The inner CV boot is the one that causes problems when the fins touch because of lifting a truck. I just wanna get some confirmation on this because I took a peek at my CVs just now and my outer boot fins are touching while my inner ones have quite some room after my 5100 lift has been on for about a year.

The reason for me asking this is that I am planning on swapping my stock coils with 881s and a top plate spacer plus a diff drop.

    Edit: added picture

5100's all around, 2.75 inch lift, polyurethane body mounts, gibson exhaust, variation of the deckplate mod, intake resonators removed 285-75-16 goodyear AT
If you are going to have it apart and you have any doubt at all, change the boots. How much will your total lift be, that will give you some idea of what to do and give responders here a bit more idea of what advise to give.

Sorry, I had it worded wrong at the end but it should be fixed now. I'm not actually taking the CVs apart I was just looking at the outside of the boots and I wanted to know if it was the inner or outer boots that wear down and bust.

As far as the lift goes. The 5100s set at the lowest with OME 881s and top plate spacer should give me about 3" of lift if not a little less. I'm a 4-cyl Ext cab. The rear has 5100s as well with the stock leaf pack and an 1.5" 3-leaf AAL.

My experience has been the iner boots wear and then puke out grease. I just went through my 60K cycle of swapping out front half axles. I just tried the CVJ Axle 'high lift' boot and I am hoping it goes a long, long time!

Boots can tear for a variety of reasons, both inner and outer, but yeah, it seems that the inner is more impacted from adding a lift. Part of this is the boot fin design is different between the inner and out boots.
