QUICK HELP - 4Runner exhaust swap

Hey guys

Is the exhaust from a '98 4Runner with the 3.4L motor swappable to an '02 Tacoma with the 3.4L motor?

My friend is looking at one at a pick a part place right now for me... I need a new cat and muffler. He is telling me he only sees 1 cat on the 4runner. Could I at least chop that one out and use it along with the muffler? He only sees the one sensor too.

Anyone have any info on the swappability of these exhaust systems? Thanks!!!

I would say if the year is the same, and the exhaust Pipes dimensions are also the same it should, but I have never done it or know anyone else who has either. Good Luck.

 

the engine is the same (5VZFE) but I guess what is throwing me is that my friend said the 4runner only has 1 cat. Not sure why there is a difference.

I can chop it up to make it fit but was wondering if the cat is compatible and why the lack of 2nd cat and sensors.

I went and looked at mine just now, and "I" only have 1 cat. You have the Manifold on the Engine......the Manifold pipe (pre-cat) with 1 sensor, then the Cat, then the pipe with #2 sensor on the pipe to the muffler, then the Muffler and the tail pipe. Do you have dual exhaust??????

 

My 02 dbl cab has 2 cats

 

yeah my 02 double cab has a sensor after the manifold and before that first sensor.

 

i have no problem running one cat but i would imagine they didn't add the second one for shits and giggles.

I have a cat I bought for my old 99 4runner but never used it. Looks like this.


It is considered a federal spec exhaust system when they have 1 cat. The california spec exhaust system has 2 cats. A majority of tacomas have 2 cats. I was going to convert my 4runner to single cat, but never got around to seeing if it would work before I sold it.

 

what all is needed to convert?

i would think it would throw some sort of CEL if there was a missing cat before my first sensor if it is programmed for a truck with 2 cats.
