Need an oil change and I live in a new area. Until I pin a good new mechanic (with availability) what are thoughts on Valvoline or jiffy lube type places, Ok in a pinch or the type of place that drains the oil and forgets to refill?

Will likely start changing my own soon.

Honestly, you probably have about the same chance that a dealership or a Jiffy Lube place forgets to put oil in...or lets it all leak back out before pulling your car around anyway.

That said, the best way is to just bite the bullet and do it yourself.

They use bulk oil that is often low bid and reconditioned. I would find another place to take my truck if it was mine

I used jiffy lube once. I like planting my feet right at the garage threshold and watching exactly what they are doing. The only downside is having to say "no" to all 20 upsell attempts during the process.

The other downside is that my local jiffy is way more expensive than the dealer. 108 bucks for oil/filter was enough for me to go out and buy a drain pan and funnel that day.

find yourself a change place that lets you stay in the vehicle while they change it. also find one that will lube your chassis, use to be the assistant manager at an Oil Can Henry's here in Oregon and would fill in at a couple in Washington. was a bit better when you had someone watching your work.

    I would not do it.

After high school they let a moron like me do the oil changes and filters in the pit. It took 2 weeks before I doubled a gasket on a filter and the customer blew their engine a few hours later.

    Just saying :anonymous:

Thanks for all the input… might have to go to the stealership one last time sounds like the quick joints are no good.

Any TW oil brand favorites or it’s all the same $hit?

If you had a 2nd gen or 3rd gen with the 4-cyl I'd say go ahead. The 2GR V6 with the finicky oil filter cap is more likely to be botched by a quick lube place than by a Toyota dealer.

Any major brand is fine, that said I use Toyota oil, it is reasonably priced and easily available.

When I have too, I will. It's not all doom and gloom. Just check everything when they are done. I've never had an issue. Also, with past vehicles I found a spot that I liked with workers that were there for years. So we all got to know each other. The connivence is hard to beat.

Been going to Valvoline in my town for 20 years never had a problem but maybe I’ve just gotten lucky. Also could be a location by location, who’s working kinda thing.

Honestly, @DeepFriedTaco , you might be best served by giving your general location (what quadrant of a state are you in) and see if anyone here has a place they'd recommend. I'll tell you now, if you're in Wyoming, buy the stuff and do it yourself. :D

All my rigs are purpose built. From crawling to camping. I also enjoy a nice stock truck for what that’s worth. Toyota’s are the jam!
It’s all about who is working on your truck. My best friend owns a very reputable Landcruiser/off-road shop. They have one kid (greenhorn) there that I firmly stated that he will never work in my truck again.

Kid left the screw in funnel on my tundra, and never put the cap back on my oil spout. Drive around like that for a bit, and took some photos I sent stating “I found your funnel”!
I was pissed and this is one of my close buddies’ shops.
I took it back in to get a fresh oil change, as I wanted to dump anything that had maybe gotten in there (like dirt cause I live on a long gravel road).
Can you believe the same kid was there, we made him do the oil change again in front of us, and somehow he forgot to even change the fucking filter!!!! Right in front of us.
It’s all about the people not the place.

OP, make sure to check your engine bay and oil level after every visit.

A jiffylube guy filled my truck up with the wrong oil. The way he did it, it looked like he was just grabbing the pump hose closest to him all day.

I don’t automatically think that people working at a quick lube shop are incompetent.
We all start somewhere, and some stay where they start.

Accidents can happen. We usually hear about the accidents.
    But rarely about the successes.

I’m here to report the success.

    I figure I have 2 options.
Put a little faith in someone else, or put the faith in myself.
Even I have screwed up at times.
