Do I even need a rack, can I just tie down the front and rear of a 16 foot kayak or did I need to tie it down in the middle too? I've been using 3 inch foam block on the roof with 4 straps, is 4 over kill and I only need two?
I've been thinking about a rack because I want to carry two in the future.

I'm looking for a quiet roof rack for a kayak or two. I just tried the removable Yakima round bars and I think they are too loud and make the roof pulsate. I consider just using the rear bar and a trailer mount holder , but it was still too loud to drive around with on a regular basis. I see why they sell whisper bars.

Should I install dynamat in the head liner?
Would and OEM one be quieter?
Would a rack that sits higher actually be quieter?
Newer racks have crossbars that fold, is it for efficiency or noise?
Any suggestion on a quite racks?

I can't do the ladder rack thing because I have a tonneau cover with a Yakima rail system. Yakima says they don't have a ladder tall rack that mounts into their rails, just to the truck bed side rails.

I've also seen the racks that extend 5-8 feet off of a receiver which could work but i'd like to keep the overall length short for convenience

    Thanks in advance.

No I haven't tried to fairing so I removed the front bar completely and ran with just the rear bar and it was still noticeable. I'll see If I can borrow someones fairing and see if it makes a difference.

I even tried moving the front bar further back to get out of the air stream but it didn't help either.

Thanks for verifying that is should be silent.

The fairing should help with the noise quiet a bit. I put Yakima racks with a faring on my ext. cab tacoma and it never bothered me. Any noise was masked by the mud terrains anyway.

Maybe I'll just get a TRD exhaust to drown out the noise on the freeway :D since I don't plan on mudding with a with a Kayak on the roof.

I'm trying to keep the cab quiet so someone can get some beauty sleep after a long day. Otherwise I'd just use the radio to drown it out.
