Added extra awesomeness to its original awesomeness.
Not totally true, my company offered to hold my position a couple of weeks while I trained for another job to see if I liked it. The training was 3.5 months so they couldn't hold it the entire time, but said they would hire me back anytime. Needless to say I would be finishing training in three weeks but decided to stick where I am at.

Even at hourly jobs I prefer to give 2 weeks notice. Every time I have done this my last day at work my boss has told me something to the effect of, "thanks for giving notice and leaving on good terms. If you ever find yourself in need of a job, come talk to me." Also now I'm in more professional surroundings and word has come back to me that my bosses are discussing me with various industry people in a positive way at conventions and trade shows when they have the chance. I'm now professionally and publicly associated with my company and quitting without notice could potentially be a sketchy career move. It can serve you well not to burn those bridges in some cases.

But I've also had jobs where I was only too happy to douse those bridges in gasoline a light a match.

I know one of the placed when you get fired or "resign" they give you two weeks of pay. But when you quit they pay only hours worked.

No thats at the hospital. If you quit the FD they say bye bye and thousands of other people test for your job. The hospital is just really nice when they let you go.

Agreed on the notice - it usually serves you well to give one - but be ready I always say. I got sent home immediately once, but w/the pay. I was taking another job, and I managed to start a wk early. Just lucky.

But once, I actually pulled out my cell phone in a meeting w/my mgr. Called my wife and said "hey, you cool w/me quitting my job?" She said yes. I got up and walked out. Backed my car up to the door, loaded my shit and left! Didn't say jack to that ass. Everyone should do that at least once! Man, that just felt good! Times were good. I was working w/in 2 wks. (re: the job I mentioned a paragraph up)

That's great if you have a back up plan, not so good for the average Joe. I applaud your actions, you obviously had something to fall back on.
